Introduction to Wikis / WikiWikiWeb

Subtitles of the Movie

Let's briefly talk about WikiWikiWeb, which is the grandfather of all wikis. It was the first implementation of the wiki technology. It was originally developed by Ward Cunningham, who's the father of the wiki technology and originally coded in the Perl programming language. WikiWikiWeb contains discussion about software engineering and I will say contains because it's still alive and well on the Internet as we speak. Wiki is the Hawaiian word for quick and WikiWeb uses a wiki-based engine. It also founded the syntax known as CamelCase. Now, camel case is a unique situation where two words are joined together without spaces, such as, for example, iPod and you'll notice that the words WikiWikiWeb are joined without spaces and the W's are all capitalized and it kind of looks like humps on a camel, so there you have CamelCase. WikiWikiWeb has a direct influence on all current wikis, such as Wikipedia or the Amazon wiki, Amapedia. Some sister sites you should checkout if you're looking into wikis and WikiWikiWeb, FitWiki, YClublet, MeatBallWiki, Green Cheese, the Reform Society, the Adjunct and WikiBase, all some very unique ideas and concepts worth checking into if you're interested in learning more about wikis.
