Introduction to Wikis / What a Wiki is

Subtitles of the Movie

So let's get started on this course with what is a wiki anyway? The unofficial definition of a wiki is a web page that anybody can edit. Why is this the unofficial definition of a wiki? Well, wikis can mean many different things to many different people. But first we're going to talk about the history of wikis and how they came about being. The first wiki was released in 1995 by a fellow named Ward Cunningham. He owns a company called Cunningham & Cunningham. You can visit their website at C2.com. Mr. Cunningham intended on a wikis being a simple online database. He was wanting to contribute to his community via the Portland Pattern Repository. Now, one thing you need to know is that almost all wiki engines are open source. What does this mean? Well, open source means that anyone who has a gift or a talent for creating new ideas can contribute to an open-source product, meaning they can add their ideas to this particular wiki engine so they can improve upon it, they can make it better, they can add new features. So why the online database concept? Well, he wanted to be able to link content to each other to create new ideas to allow people to add and edit their own content to this online database. A wiki can actually even link to content that is non-existent and we'll go on to that in a later chapter. This allows your content to change and grow, so linking to content is not existent right now allows you to link to it and then add it as it changes and grows. This concept fosters sharing and cooperation among users.
