Welcome / Visual Studio 2008 Requirements

Subtitles of the Movie

Now let's talk about the requirements for installing Visual Studio. So, you've decided on your version Ð we talked about that in a different video Ð and now, where are you going to put that thing? So, let's talk about Operating Systems. First off, you need XP with Service Pack 2 or above, or you can use Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or above, and just for your information in this Course we will be using Server 2003. You can use Server 2003 Release 2, or above; you can also use Windows Vista; or, you can use Windows Server 2008. So you can load Vista into any of these environments and you should be just fine. So, you're pretty wide open there; no big restrictions. Now hardware requirements, and if you're going to take any of the Certification Exams you need to memorize these operating system and hardware requirements and just regurgitate them back to them on the Exam and you'll be fine, but notice they break these into minimum and recommended, OK. For Visual Studio 2008 the minimum requirements on the CTU, they're recommending at least a 1.6 gigahertz processor, that would be a single processor; at least 384 megabytes of RAM, that's almost comical. If you've only got 384 megabytes of RAM you've got some other issues to deal with and you're not going to like the way Visual Studio runs in this environment by the way. But you'll need at least a 1024 by 768 Display and all I can tell you is, open Visual Studio, put it into 800 by 600 and you'll see why you want 1024 by 768. And I would even tell you that this is absolutely the minimum. We'll do Visual Studio in 1024 by 768 in this Tutorial and you'll still see that a lot of times the screen gets rather crowded. If we try to shoot it for the class in a higher resolution it gets extremely hard for you guys to read, so we're going to go with the minimum on Display in the class here. And, a 5400 RPM Hard Disk. Pretty standard stuff in most consumer-type PCs. Now the recommended setup or recommended hardware requirements for this is a little different: 2.2 gigahertz on the CPU, at least a gigabyte of RAM or more, the more RAM you can put on your machine the better. I'm running 4 gigabytes on my machine that I develop with so. Then, at least a 1080 by 1024 Display, and man, Displays are just like TVs now Ð the bigger, the wider, the better the resolution the better Ð so, 1080 by 1024, I know a lot of developers who like a 1600 environment, so whatever you've got, the more space you can get on that screen trust me, the better it's going to be, and I'll show you some tips and tricks later to grab some more screen space in different videos. Microsoft's recommending a 7200 RPM hard disk, or faster, and that faster part means expensive, and so you can get some of those 15000 RPM disks, all that kind of stuff, 10K and so, just again, depending on how much money you've got to spend go for it. You'll like it. If you're running this on Vista there are slightly different requirements. They're saying a 2.4 gigahertz CPU Ð kind of bizarre, I know Ð and then 768 megabytes of RAM minimum. So, again just make sure you memorize these things, but in the real world you want the fastest processor you can get, the most RAM you can get, the largest Display with the best resolution that you can get, and obviously the fastest disk. So, Visual Studio 2008, as you can tell, they're giving you a little hint here, is going to use a few of your resources and so, again, beef that machine up as much as you can and you should be fine. So, just to give you kind of a reference, the Visual Studio that you're going to see running in this Course is running in a virtual environment with about one and a half to two gigs of RAM most of the time, and running on a 2.4 gigahertz processor, so you'll kind of get an idea. We're also on a virtual, so it's a little bit slower as well. So, that's the requirements for Visual Studio 2008. Use these as a guideline in the real world for exactly what you need for it to be able to work in Visual Studio without losing your sanity for having to sit and wait for things.
