Welcome / Course Overview
Subtitles of the Movie
OK, as we get started in this Course I want to just do a real quick Course Overview to kind of give you a road map of where we're headed here and what you can expect to see and learn in this Course. I'm going to start off like I usually do with my Courses with a real quick history of Visual Studio and Microsoft development, and then talk about some of the developer challenges that you're going to face out there, that you probably already are facing out there, and some of the ways that Visual Studio's going to help you with those. Then from there we're going to jump into the Visual Studio 2008 versions that are out there so you can have a little bit better understanding of which one you might need. Then we'll jump to some related development products. Microsoft, everything in the world, I guess you've noticed, continues to get more complex and explodes into smaller and smaller pieces that we can micromanage. Same thing's happening with development. We'll talk about how you do that on a Microsoft platform. Then we'll talk about the system requirements, what kind of machine do you have to have to do this development with Visual Studio, a quick list, and talk about some of the things that are new in 2008. Now some of these things we'll be able to cover with a little bit more attention in the Course, some we'll just kind of mention them in passing because they really are more development, or more coding language type things than they are Visual Studio 2008. For example, technologies like Link Ð it's really cool, but it's a .NET Framework functionality, but it's kind of neat some of the stuff you can do in Visual Studio. Then talk about how to get your hands on your own copy of Visual Studio, how to go through that. Then I'll do a quick tour of Visual Studio to let you understand all the pieces and parts. If you're totally new to this then I think you'll get a lot out of that. If you've been around it while it'll be interesting for you to watch and see little subtle changes that have happened. Then I'll build a very simple Hello World Ð I know you're tired of those Ð but a simple Hello World application to let you start to see how the various pieces and parts of Visual Studio will start to work for you, and then we'll use that basic little program and make little tweaks to it all through the Course and you can see the various functionalities. We'll talk about languages, start up options on Visual Studio, the various toolbars that you have and what you can do with them, docking, how docking is used in there. We'll take a look at the Tool Box, the various tools that we can use, then we'll talk about some project types. Then I'll jump into the Visual Studio IDE and we'll spend some time, probably go through, gosh I think I've got like 14 different videos on the IDE, some of the various things that you can do out there in the IDE, some of the gotchas out there, some of the cool things that can happen. Then we'll jump into the Code Editor, I don't know, 7 or 8 videos there talking about how to use that Code Editor, some of the cool functions, and a couple of tips and tricks on that. Then we'll get into the world of Debugging. What are the chances that your code's going to have some problems with it. We'll do a few videos talking about such things as Setting Breakpoints, the Debug Menu, the various Debug Actions Ð step into, step over, step out Ð talk about some of the Debug Options, Debug Windows, Edit and Continue, all that sort of thing. Then I'm going to do a real quick, just 5 or 6 videos overview of Object Oriented Program because if you don't really have your head around Object-oriented Programming then you kind of really don't know what to do with this tool and why some of the things are in there the way they are. From there we'll jump into a few videos on working with Databases and some of the real cool functionalities they have built into Visual Studio 2008 because most of our applications now, one of the characteristics they have is they are connecting to a database and they're reading and writing data. Now, I'm not going to do a lot of Code examples of connecting the Databases, although I do, or I am going to show you a really cool demo of drag and drop and there's some really cool functionality in Visual Studio 2008 for that. But we'll jump out into the Server Explorer and play with Visual Studio's Diagram Designer, build some queries, talk about some Store procedures and that sort of thing. Then from there a real quick, real quick Ð notice I said real quick Ð Web development overview, talk about some Web development, ASP.NET Visual Studio 2008. I won't show you a whole lot there, just give you some ideas, talk about a few things, just a few videos. Then I'll just talk about a few extra things that I didn't know how to throw in anywhere else. We'll talk about some .NET 3.5 stuff, give you a real quick, get-you-started kind of demo on the Windows Presentation Foundation Tools; do the same thing for Windows Workflow Foundation; and then just kind of throw in some miscellaneous stuff, talk about how to use a Macro inside Visual Studio, how to do some Refactoring, some Unit Testing, and that sort of thing. So, we're going to cover a lot of stuff; you're going to be here for quite a few hours if you go through this whole thing. So, get ready, get comfortable, turn the volume up and let's get at it, OK.
