Visual Studio IDE / Fonts

Subtitles of the Movie

Now there's one more code customization that you can do in Visual Studio 2008, and you need to be aware of this one, and that is the ability to change fonts in various places. Now, one thing that I've noticed as I approach my upper 40s and lower 50s now, is that the writing on the screen seems to be getting harder and harder to read, and now I've got these irritating glasses, you know, that are the bi-focal things without the line, and so I have to crank my neck back to read things that are close and so forth. I can always tell, generally, the age of a developer just by looking at their screen before I even met them because if they've got this super small print and they've got the resolution way up I know that I'm talking to somebody, a young man or a young woman, who's in their early 20s or so forth, and then you go to one of these screens and it looks like some sort of, it just kind of attacks you, everything's huge and big and the resolution's like 1024 by 760, or even 800 by 600, it's one of my buddies, you know, it's one of the old timers, and so you can actually change this if you like your fonts larger or smaller, or different colors or whatever, and I want to show you how to do that because they can be a very personal setting and I'm certainly not making fun of anybody who needs it larger because believe me I'm in that crowd. Let me show you how to do this. If I go to Tools, come back down to Options, I want you to notice that under Environment there's a setting called Fonts and Colors. I want to show you something; it's very easy to get lost here and assume that it should be under Text Editor because you see All Languages, but if you expand that you'll notice there are no Font Settings. OK? There are some other things that we'll deal with later. So, it's actually under Environment on Fonts and Colors, and notice that this is going to show me the settings for the Text Editor which is where I'm at right now, and so right now it's on Courier New 10 and so if you're one of these 20-year-olds who wants as much junk as they can get on the screen at once notice I can make it smaller. And you see a lot of folks who like that, OK? So, I don't like the Courier New, though, so I can change that and say, well let's go to, ah, let's not do that. Let's go to Reference Sans Serif and click that and so notice I've got this. So, I can customize this to whatever I like, OK, and I can make it obviously a lot larger. But I want you to notice something, that I can change the way Selected Text looks, OK, I can make Selected Text have a green background and so when I come out here and select something it's now got a green background, OK, pretty easy to see. But as you notice, you've got a lot of leeway here and notice all the things that you can change: Bookmarks, Brace Matching, and I'll just kind of scroll down through it. You can make a full time job out of customizing Visual Studio 2008. Now, if you do make a full time job out of this you're probably not going to get paid very long, so get in here and make some settings and get out. Notice I can also choose, at the top Drop-down, a lot of different places that I can set the Immediate Window, the Memory Window, the Output Window, various Locals Window and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I can set all this stuff however I want it individually, or I can do All Text Tool Windows, you know, I can do Plain Text, and you know, again. Do whatever you want to. I can say use Defaults and it sets everything back to where I was. Well, I didn't hit it right. But very easy to get everything just like I want it and to make it just like, just like it is, just like it was when I first opened it, OK, but make sure that you again be aware that you can set this thing however you want it, however you like it personally, OK? So, this is just a little tip on customizing the Code and the actual stuff you're having to work with and read and type hour by hour, OK.
