Introduction to Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Tutorials

Getting Started With Visual Studio 2008 / Visual Studio Tour

Subtitles of the Movie

Let's start off by taking just a quick tour of Visual Studio. And what I'm going to do is, I'm just going to open Visual Studio. I've already installed it. I'll click on Start, then I'll go to Programs, then I will choose Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and then choose it from the Menu. Notice it's going to pop right up then in this instance, now yours might look slightly different because what I got was the Start Page and we'll talk about this in just a few minutes, but this center area of the screen right here is where you're going to normally be working. And if I close the Start Page you'll see it a little clearer here, there's a big gray area. This is the area we would normally code in and I'll show you that in just a minute. Over to the right, by default, you're probably going to see a Solution area, underneath that a Properties area, and over to the left you will see a Toolbox. Now notice it'll say there are no usable controls in this group so we can add things to the Toolbox, but the way we're going to see this stuff come to life is if I come up here and click File, New, Choose a Project, and we'll go over this in some future videos. I'm just going to do a basic Windows Project, and you'll notice this thing is going to click and hum a few minutes and do a lot of things on the screen there that we will catch up on a little bit later. But I want to show you the way this is actually going to look in real time, and in a different video I'm going to create just a real simple little application and show you some of the ins and outs here. But notice for a Windows Form Application in the Solution Explorer I'm starting to see some of the information for my files. Down here I see Properties for the Form and this is going to be the area I'll work in; I can resize my form simply by clicking and dragging, and you're going to notice here that in Visual Studio there's a lot going on. Right across here on the top I have my Main Menu bar. Now, depending on what I have loaded in the area here this Menu Bar will change. It is dynamic based on where I'm at and what I'm working on. Next step, and I can slide this over, you'll notice I have toolbars up here and I can turn on various toolbars and I will actually do a separate video on the toolbars, okay? Then on the left over here is the Toolbox. Now, I want to show you something about the Toolbox, and that is that it also is going to change based on the project you opened, and you have some multiple areas in the Toolbox, and we'll look at the Toolbox in a later video and talk about how to add things to the Toolbox and so forth. Now at the very bottom you will see that if I mouse over this an Error List will pop up. And one of the things that can be somewhat intimidating about the Visual Studio Integrated Development Environment is all the various things that can happen in here because there's lots of Windows, lots of things that can be turned On and off. If I go to View you'll notice all the various Windows that I can open. For example if I want to take a look at the Class View I can open that, and it opened the Class View over here, and notice I now have Solution Explorer tab and Class View tab. Now, let me warn you. If this is the first time you've seen this Interface you're going to notice there are tabs almost everywhere all over this screen, and they can get a little confusing, but trust me, you'll get up to speed on them real quickly and you'll be able to move around without any real problem. So, in other videos in the course now, we're going to go through things like the Toolbox, the Solutions Floor, the Properties Window, some of the ins and outs of this thing and how to manage it. So by the time we get through here you'll have a very good introduction to all the pieces and parts of this thing and what we can do with it. OK, so first thing I want to just get you a first quick look at Visual Studio if you've never seen it. And so what I'll do in the next video or so is actually create a sample App and show you how you can use all these things and how they work together, OK? So, that's just a quick visual overview of Visual Studio.
