Wireless Standards & Topologies / Other Standards

Some other standards that are equally as important as the A, B, G, N and I standards that we'll talk about are some of the 802.11 standards. Now, we're not going to go over those in depth during this part of the course. We may touch upon some more of them later on as we go. But briefly let's touch on each one of them. There's the 802.11E standard, which addresses quality of service standards required for things like voice-over IP and media streaming. Then there's the 802.11F standard, which addresses roaming and multi-vendor interoperability. Interoperability means that devices from different manufacturers will work together. The 802.11H standard governs the European use of the five gigahertz band. So that band is finally able to be used in Europe to use the A standard type of devices. Some other standards we can look at as well include the Bluetooth standard which is 802.15.1. We'll go more in depth about Bluetooth in a little bit later on in the course. There's also the wireless access protocol that we're going to cover very shortly. There's, uh, WAP version one and WAP version two that covers basically standardizing websites for use by mobile devices. And there's also 802.1X, which covers port-based authentication and encryption for wireless devices and wireless networks. We'll talk about that a little bit more as well in the security section.
