Wireless Standards & Topologies / 802.11n

Subtitles of the Movie

Now let's look at the most modern of the 802.11 standards, the N standard. Now, the N standard is the latest draft standard for wireless networks. It is not a standard yet. It is still in draft, but it is expected to be adopted sometime in 2007. Eventually it's going to replace the G standard, uh, for wireless networking in small environments. Now, as I said, it's not a standard yet. It was still in draft form as of November 2006 and I think the last time I heard, they expect it to go standard about November 2007. Of course, they will, there's going to be some discussion and some meetings about this and there may be some changes in the standard between now and then. But some vendors are already selling N equipment. Now, most vendors are promising that no matter if there are changes in the standard, not minor changes, that's all there is expected is minor changes, but their equipment will still be compatible with whatever the final standard turns out to be. Maybe through a firmware upgrade or something of that nature. Now, the draft standard calls for data rates of 200 to 500 megabits per second. This is a vast improvement over any of the other previous standards we talked about. Unfortunately, it's going to have a bit of a range handicap and its range is going to be right about 50 meters. It's going to operate in either of the frequency ranges that the previous devices operated at; 2.4 gigahertz or the five gigahertz frequencies. It's also expected to be interoperable with Legacy B and G devices, so you don't have to rush out and replace all those old B network cards just yet.
