Wireless Standards & Topologies / 802.11g

Subtitles of the Movie

Now we come to the 802.11G standards. G standards are what's normally used in most modern wireless networks in home and small business environments right now. It was released in June, 2003 and brought some improvements to the wireless networking standards. It also operates in the 2.4 gigahertz range like the B standard, but it provides speeds comparable to the A standard; up to 54 megabits per second. Now, unfortunately, like the, uh, A standard, it has shorter range, right around 50 meters. But it is interoperable with B standard devices. Most devices, in fact, that are sold today for home use and small office use are BG standard devices. In other words, a Linksys router, for example, that's a BG router will talk to a network card that's a B standard from another vendor or a G network card from another vendor. Now, it does use OFDM as its transmission method, just like the A standard does. The problem with the G standard, like the B standard, is because of its frequency range, it can suffer from interference from other devices operating in the 2.4 gigahertz range. Although it's a little bit more resistant to, uh, interference than the B standard devices are.
