Wireless Standards & Topologies / Intro to Wireless Standards & Topologies

Subtitles of the Movie

During this portion of the course, we're going to look at wireless standards and topologies. Now, we're going to look at several things. We'll look at emerging standards, some of the standards that come out over the past few years that defined wireless networks. We're also going to look at the important IEEE 802.11 standards and these standards are the basis of what most wireless networks are based upon. We'll also look at the Wi-Fi Alliance and their efforts and some of the things they do for us in terms of standardization products and technologies. Some of the standards we're going to look at during this portion of the course include the 802.11A, B G and in standards. We'll also look at some other standards that are important to wireless networks. And finally, as we get to the end of this portion of the course, we'll talk about wireless topologies as well. Now, before we go into depth on the standards, let me tell you a little bit about 802.11 standards. Now, basically, the 802.11 standards were released by the IEEE and they govern wireless networking essentially. Now, the original 802.11 standard, called the Legacy Standard, was released in 1997. It defined a frequency range of 2.4 gigahertz, the industrial, scientific and medical band. The original standard only talked about data rates of one and two megabits per second, not like the 54 megabits per second we have now with 802.11G for example. The standard only allowed two types of signaling; frequency-hopping spread spectrum or direct sequence spread spectrum. Now, of course, these were the original standards and we've come a long way. We have far newer standards that are out there now that we use in our wireless networks and we're going to talk about those in depth now.
