There are many other wireless devices out there that we can integrate into our electronic lives, into our wireless networks as well. Wireless communications devices, for example. Traditional wired devices such as telephones, video surveillance cameras can be integrated into our wireless networks. Wireless IP phones for example. You can have a wireless IP phone that communicates like voice-over IP and have it connect to your wireless network. It can be used to call other phones all over the world; normal hard-wired phones or other phones that are on the wireless network. You can also take traditional video surveillance a step farther by not having a bunch of wires. You can actually buy wireless IP video surveillance cameras and integrate them into your wireless network. You can use them for babysitter monitoring or putting in your child's room and have it send the signal to the wireless network, which in turn send it to your computer upstairs and you can watch what's going on to keep an eye on your kids. There's also wireless access point detectors. And we'll talk about those a little bit more when we talk about the penetration testing and security testing of wireless networks. But basically a wireless access point detector is a small device, about the size of a keychain. It detects wireless signals and tells you what direction they're coming from and what the signal strength is and in some cases, what kind of signal it is. There are also wireless extenders or boosters, as I call them. Basically a booster is a device you can buy that you can put near the outskirts of the range of your wireless network and it can serve to boost or amplify the signal to extend your range out. All these devices that I just mentioned are basically there to enhance your wireless communication. As I mentioned a minute ago, wireless networks are infiltrating every aspect of our electronic lives. There are so many available peripherals out there and they range from different things like gaming to work to everything in between. Let's look at gaming for example. Some of the wireless devices out there are for gaming. The Microsoft X Box, the Nintendo Wii, the, uh, Sony PlayStation III. All are wireless compatible and will talk to your wireless network, enabling you to do a multi-player gaming online with other people on the Internet or within your own wireless network. PDA is another example of how our mobile electronic lives are changing. You can take an iPaq or Palm and to connect to your wireless network for example and surf the Internet or exchange files with computers. You can also use them for the more mundane work tasks such as server administration. I've seen people administer their entire networks from a PDA transmitting to a wireless network. So this just gives you an example of how, how prevalent and pervasive wireless is in our lives. There are some other wireless peripherals we've briefly mentioned here and we could go on and on and on. But there are other wireless communication devices that enhance and help us control our wireless networks such as wireless bridges, switches and controllers. There's hotspot gateways. A lot of, uh, hotels, for example, use wireless hotspot gateways so that their guests get access to the wireless network and surf the Internet if they've got the correct password, but other folks outside of those networks can't. There point of sale and inventory systems that a lot of factories use that use, uh, wireless barcode readers and the like to keep track of inventory. We all use, or have used at one time or another, probably wireless keyboards or mice. Those are examples of devices that use infrared signals. There are also wireless storage systems, wireless network-attached storage that use uh, radio waves, terabyte storage systems that are wireless that help us to manage our data better and aren't limited by wired networks. The point of all this is that there are wireless peripherals out there, a wide range of peripherals that you can use and install and integrate into your wireless networks. As a wireless network administrator, it helps to know about these devices in case you're ever asked to install one in your company network or your business network or if you're a freelancer and you install wireless networks in homes, be aware that these things exist and get some know how to install them and get familiar with them.
