Key Concepts / Context Click

Subtitles of the Movie

So one final element of the User Interface that we do need to discuss in order to understand how to work in SketchUp from here on out is that of the Context Click. Now the Context Click allows you to access commands that are relevant to the particular item that you're clicking and how we invoke the Context Click is if you're on a one-button mouse on the Mac you're going to want to go ahead and Ctrl-Click. And if you're on a multiple-button mouse, or a scroll-wheel mouse on Mac or PC, you're going to want to go ahead and click with the right button. So I'm going to go ahead and click with the right button to show you how that's done on the axis and there we go. There's our Context Menu that has popped up thanks to the Context Click. Now I highly value the scroll-wheel type mouse for working in SketchUp, whether you're on a Mac or a PC. I think it's a great investment and it's something that will pay nearly instant dividends when you're working in SketchUp. I highly, highly recommend that you consider buying a scroll-wheel mouse if you don't already have one for working in SketchUp. Now, that aside, let's go ahead and talk a little bit about the commands that you might find in the Context Menu and why we're going to use them so often instead of going up to the menu. Now the first benefit of using the Context Click is you don't have to move the mouse. And it may seem like a small thing but hunting through these menus trying to find a command that you're looking for can be really tedious and, you know, also there's this issue that sometimes these right-click Context Menus are containing commands that you can't access anywhere else in the software. For instance, I'm going to go ahead and click on this texture and I'm going to show you there's a command here that allows me to position this texture but I can only access this using the Context Click. There is no other way for me to access this command and it's a very useful command, but it's one that you would never even know is there if you didn't use your Context Click. So I highly recommend that you get accustomed to using your Context Click as often as possible and, of course, as you see me clicking through the software I wanted you to know where why it's coming up, where it's coming from and why I might choose to use the Context Click rather than hunting through menus, or some other keyboard shortcut type situation. So let me go ahead and just show you some of the different Context Menus that you might see. So, first off, we'll go ahead and click on Sang here. He is a component so right now we get to see that Sang has a number of commands that are relative to components, but we also have a group here and if I right-click on that group you're going to see that these are commands that are relevant to the group including Make a Component, which is what Sang is. If I right-click on an edge I'm going to go ahead and get right-click Context menu items that are relevant to the edge and if I right-click on the face I'll get Context items that are relevant to the face. But if I click on the entire shape I'm going to get a completely different set of Context items. So, Context is really important and, when I say Context what I mean is, is that it's going to take into consideration precisely what it is that you have selected when you access that Context Click.
