Maya Navigation & Customization / Installing Scripts & Plugins

Subtitles of the Movie

Adding custom scripts, tools and plug-ins in Maya is actually quite easy. Now that we have our custom toolbar created, I'd like to add one more custom tool that will prevent us from having to use the view cube. In the folder that's been provided to you, simply go into the Scripts folder and you'll find a MEL script called Views. Right click and select copy and then going into your Maya directory under the version of Maya that you're currently using, you'll find a Scripts folder, right click again and paste that script into the folder. There's no need to restart Maya however what we do need to do is add the script onto the window through the MEL command and the way we do that is simply by typing in the name of the script, in this case it's Views and add a semicolon, I will highlight that and middle mouse drag my cursor to the shelf and let go. In this particular script it asks if I'd like it to be a MEL or Python, I'll select MEL and so there is my script. To change the names of any of these objects, the way we do that is go to Window, Setting preferences, Shelf editor, or again if you recall we can go to the shelf editor right from this icon. The shelf content displays the different names of the objects, I'll select on Views which has no name for the icon and I'll give that a name now, I'll press the Enter bar and you'll notice the button now has a name. Under Hypershade, I previously changed Hypershade to Maps because that's where I keep my texture maps. I also prefer to change my UV texture editor which is usually UTE and I change mine to UVS so this is how you would simply do that, press Enter, and then at the end of the operation Save all shelves. For tools such as the MJ Poly tool which is a plug in, it actually will embed itself within the Maya interface. For this to work properly however, you will need to restart Maya. Instructions for MJ Poly tools comes with the plug in when you download it, I've included an extras folder which describes where you can find MJ Poly tools on the Internet with a link provided. I hope that helps and if you have any questions regarding setting up custom tools or MEL script please feel free to email me at mayatraining@aol.com.
