Maya Navigation & Customization / Settings & Preferences

Subtitles of the Movie

Changing the Settings and Preferences within Maya is very easy. It also makes sense because it allows you to do quite a number of changes that I think you'll find much easier to work within. For example if we go to Window, Setting Preferences, and then click on Preferences, within the menu system that shows up you can see our categories are quite extensive. You can then go through and change many of the different settings within these categories, for example, when opening up attributes you can have them open up into separate windows, I personally prefer them to open in separate windows, for the course of this DVD I've had to keep them within the main window. However, separate windows allow you to then move the attribute editor over to a second monitor if you prefer working that way. I'll go ahead and change these settings right now and then I'll move on to some of the other categories such as the view cube which I can disable, by turning off the view cube, I again personally prefer to use a custom script that allows me to change the different axis's within my display panel much faster and easier. Under Display you can change the file size of your texture resolution. Under Polygons I personally prefer to set my edges to standard and I set my lights to border edges, this basically means that any open borders will actually show in highlight of the edges. Under Settings, you want to make sure that the access up is Y not Z, Z is more for architectural working in AutoCAD. Working units, we tend to work within centimeters at most studios and if you're working in animation you may wish to set the different film speed too. Moving down to Selection, once again I choose whole face, whole face allows me to select anywhere on a face as opposed to a small center pivot. And finally, Undo, I always turn on the undo and set the queue to infinite. This means that you can basically go backwards in Maya and undo all the way back to the beginning of your project. Once you've finished making your custom settings be sure to hit save. It's also a good idea to go to File and then Save Preferences just to insure that Maya has saved everything back into its menu system.
