Basic Modeling Techniques / Completing the Weapon Body
Subtitles of the Movie
Now with both the front and back portions of the rifle modeled, I'll go ahead and select the face off of the rifle front and delete it and select the faces off of the rifle handle and also delete it so that we can seam both of these together. I'll select on the handle, Shift Select on the front barrel and do a Combine. This now turns the mesh into one object. Now I can select the vertex and clicking on a vertice and holding down the V Key, I can now Vertex Snap to the vertices of the rifle barrel so that I know my vertices are correctly one on top of another when I go ahead and do a merge vertice later. I'll go all the way up the chain of the rifle only working on one half of the model because we'll be deleting the other half and mirroring the geometry. Now, it's not necessary for me to go all the way up the rifle at this time simply because it currently doesn't match the template. When I go back into my front view and look at the template, you'll notice that the back portion of the rifle barrel should be lower. But I currently can't move it down because I have the eyesight that is in the way. Only until I extrude the eyesight will I be able to move the edges down. So we'll come back to that piece later on. For now let me go to the front of the rifle and add a split polygon to the front of the nozzle. This will allow me to now cut the rifle model in half and delete half of the geometry. I'll go to my Side-Panel View and Drag Select over half of the faces and delete them. Now in my mirror geometry I need to be in the minus Z direction and I'll say Mirror. I'll zoom into my mesh. I'll Drag Select over the vertices down the middle of the rifle. I'll go ahead and do a Merge Vertice and now back to the Front View, I'll go ahead and begin working on the eyesight. I'll Drag Select the faces over the eyesight and do an extrude. I'll then select the vertices on the very top portion of the eyesight and switch to Scale so that I can flatten them out. I'll also use the blue part of the scale just to widen the diameter and make it a bit more pleasing. Now, I want to extrude one side of the sight. Again, I always work on just one side of the model and then I'll select the inner edge and move that outward and once again both of them just to get an aesthetic look. Now I need to also split the face so that I can delete out the middle portion. So I'll simply come in for now making triangles. I'm not concerned about them. I'll fix those later on. I start splitting out the faces and then I'll choose my face and then deleting out the faces on all three sides. Now I'll go ahead and select my vertices so that I can scale them uniformly and make them nice and flat. I'll do the top, I'll do the bottom and then I'll select both the top and the bottom and make them square. I'll now move it out slightly. This gives me a wider channel. I'll go to my Append Polygon Tool and now fill in the hole that I created. So I'll select in the direction of the arrows and press Enter and now I can come back to where we left off in the back handle. I'll go back into my viewport and this time I'll select on the edges and I can now move the edges down to line up with the template. I'll deselect the edges that are in place and continue moving down the edges until they're all in the proper position. I'll also select the faces in the eyesight, scale them in slightly to create a bevel. I'll go ahead and move the faces up slightly. Then I'll select the edges and begin moving them down also into position, lining up with the template. Now I can go ahead and finish out snapping the rest of my vertices from the handle to the barrel. I'll come in closer just to ensure I have the proper vertices. And now that that's complete, I'll drag over my vertices and do a merge. That seams everything together. I'll go back to my Side View and delete half the rifle and in the next video I'll show you the final assembly.
