Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie we are going to briefly examine the different file formats that are available to us inside of GIMP. Right now inside of GIMP I have open a file that we created from scratch using the File, New Menu Command. So I'm going to go ahead and save this by going to the File Menu and clicking Save. Now, this Save Image Dialog Box is going to ask me for the name, location and file type that I would like to save this as. Now, I'm going to go ahead and save this as Learning GIMP and I can also add on the file extension that I want to use. So I'm going to .XCF and what GIMP will do is it will detect what that file format is by what I type at the end and save it appropriately in that format. Now, if I'm not sure what file format I want to use, I can come down here and expand the Select File Type by Extension and what we will see is all of the different file extensions that GIMP has support for. Now, the first one here is GIMP XCF. The XCF file format is the default file format for GIMP and it is going to maintain a lot of information about our image, such as current selections, as well as layers and a lot of different options that we would want to be working with inside of GIMP. So if you are going to be working inside of GIMP for a long period of time on a specific image, it is recommended that you use this XCF. However, if you're going to be saving out to another application, it's recommended that you find a common file format and save to that file format. Now, down below you'll see that we have a lot of different file formats, including C Source Code and a bunch of other stuff. I do want to point out that there is this BZIP Archive and if you take a look at the extension over to the side, the extension are XCF.BZ2. Now, this is actually going to compress our file and it's going to compress without losing any information about the image. So the reason why this is available, and there's a couple of other compressed file formats for XCF as well, is because your XCF file formats are going to get quite large with all of your different layer information and selection information and to maintain that, you're going to want to compress it. So I'm just going to scroll down here just to take a look at what's there. We have EPS files, GIF files, different types of GIMP files, such as brushes and patterns. There's the GZIP Archive for XCF and we have a large number of file formats. Now, GIMP is not only going to allow us to save these file formats, but GIMP is also going to attempt to open them. So that's definitely a good thing. Now, of course, one last thing I want to talk about in our Save Image Dialog is the Browse for Other Folders. So if I don't necessarily want to save it into this folder, I can expand and here's my file system. I can save it anywhere I want to inside of my file system. I'm going to go ahead and collapse that. And for our image, as I said, we will want to use the XCF file format because we're going to want to maintain all of our information in this file. So let's go ahead and just click Save and it saves our file for us and we can see that it has saved here in our Title Bar by saying it's Learning GIMP.XCF. Now, that concludes this movie on the different file formats that are available and some of the options therein.
