Setting Up GIMP / System Setup
Subtitles of the Movie
In this tutorial we take a look at how we can prepare our system to allow us to take full advantage of the power of GIMP, now if you've downloaded the GIMP installation packages you can end up installing those and you can be just fine however if you want to take full advantage of the potential of GIMP you will want to install a couple more things. So what I'm getting ready to show you is an optional add on that you may or may now want to use depending on what your end purpose is so if you plan on developing for GIMP in terms of plug ins or trying to contribute to the development of GIMP itself you may want to download the package that I'm getting ready to show you, however, if you do not intend to do that you don't necessarily need to download this, however keep in mind that it may be of benefit to you at some point to go back and add this functionality. Now if you do decide that you will need to reinstall GIMP after you've installed the package that we're getting ready to download. So let's go ahead and go to a nice little website here called www.pygtk.org now this is a GTK plus for Python now what exactly is this? Well, it's going to allow us to use Python to easily create user interfaces for the GIMP tool kit, now GTK was originally created as a platform to develop the GIMP on and it ended up migrating to being able to create applications for the Gnome Desktop in general but Python for GTK is going to allow you to use, it's going to allow you to use the Python language to do this. Now the reason why we want to have this installed is because it's going to give us the power to create some very nice features for GIMP if we're going to be doing some development or actually using some of the more experimental plug ins that other people might be creating. And if we take a look here we have a lot of information including how we can download things but there's actually an all in one installer for Win 32 that's actually what we want because our system is a Windows 32-bit system. So if you're using something else you might want to go into the downloads here and find what you're looking for. Now we want to go ahead and grab that all in one installer, now the reason we want this all in one installer is because this is going to include not only the PyGTK but also Pycairo and some other libraries that are going to be necessary for plug in development so I'm going to go ahead and save this as well and it will go into my downloads and then another great thing about this all in one installer is that it's also going to have Python bundled with it so we don't have to install five or six different packages, we just install this one and we'll be ready to go so that's definitely a great thing here. So we're just going to wait for this to download and once it does get downloaded we're going to go ahead and install this because this is a necessary step in prepping your system for optional plug in development and experimental plug in usage. As I mentioned before, this is an optional step so if you don't plan on extending the capabilities of GIMP through the use of plug ins or trying out all the experimental plug ins you don't necessarily have to install this. There we go, go ahead and run it, and because I'm using Windows I have to allow and the installer should start up here in just a moment. There it is, OK, so here is the runtime for the GTK Python runtime and the GTK modules. So all of these things are already here, just do next and that's going to be a find destination folder, I'll just go ahead and click install and we'll go through the process of installing the different packages that are available here. Now the Python language is a full fledged programming language and it's going to be beyond the scope of this video tutorial series to even cover the basics of how to use Python so if you are interested in Python development you will need to read up on your documentation and check out some of the fine tutorials that are available not just here on the Python GTK.org website but other websites dedicated to Python. So here we see that it's now installing Python 2.5 for us, and then it pops up the PyGTK installation, I'll just next it and it's telling me it has found Python which is required and here's the installation directory for Python and here's the installation directory for these packages, I'll just next it and continue through installation and it will install the appropriate files in the appropriate locations. And when I click Finish it will continue on and install some of the other modules for the other PyGTK including Pycairo and we'll just next through that and just finish it. And then we have the PyG object so I'll go ahead and install that as well and we finally have Installation complete so I'll go ahead and click close here and that concludes this video tutorial on system preparation for GIMP installation.
