Setting Up GIMP / System Requirements
Subtitles of the Movie
In this tutorial we're going to be taking a look at the system requirements that are necessary in order to run GIMP on Unix and Linux systems, Mac systems, and Windows systems so let's go ahead and jump on over to www.gimp.org and we'll see that we have the GIMP website and it's telling us about the newest release here and if we're interested in the newest features we can just click on release notes here and it will give us the information that we need. Now if we just want to download directly we can just click this download and it will take us directly to download section, now in order to find out what the actual requirements are I'm going to go ahead and scroll on down to the bottom of the page and you'll see down below we have downloads and then it's broken down into the three sections here so let's go ahead and let's check out Unix so if I click on Unix it takes me to a section titled GIMP for Unix and it's telling you how to get and install GIMP and then below that it has the requirements so here it's saying that GIMP runs on most Unix system that uses the X Window system, so here's the bare minimum more or less for some of your processor speed pentium 200 and a minimum of 128 megabytes of RAM of course most modern systems are going to have quite a bit more than this but this is basically the bare minimum. It also goes into more about how you can set up the system to include all the libraries that are going to be necessary for this. And of course one of the beautiful things about using your GNU Linux or Unix distributions is a lot of the times GIMP is prepackaged into the distribution so you don't even have to install it or do any system prep so if your system can run those operating systems more than likely you're going to be able to use the GIMP. Now also if you cannot find your pre-compiled package for GIMP you can build from the source code and if you're interested to do that it's not all that difficult to do and plus there's plenty of documentation laying around that will help you compile, OK, so let's go ahead here and take a look at Mac OS, now there are a couple of different ways that you can get GIMP for Macintosh however one of the system requirements is that it will only run on Mac OS X or Mac OS X, now the reason why that is is because with Mac OS X they changed how the operating system worked and now it's based on BSD which is very Unix like so it does talk a little bit about what you will need to have on your Macintosh in order to run GIMP here you'll have to have an X windowing layer which is available inside of Mac OS X and then the appropriate graphics libraries and tool kits. Now they are suggesting that you use, now they are suggesting that you use MacPorts or Fink to install the libraries that it depends on now there are some pretty good little links here taking you to those associated projects so that you can get the documentation that you need as well as the software that's going to help you install the GIMP. I'm going to go on and jump on down here and take a look at the Windows, the reason why I waited till the end to go to the WIndows is because this is the file that we're going to end up downloading because we are going to be working on a Windows based system. Now it does mention here that the site only distributes the GIMP source code however you can download the executable files from the following sites so we will download that in just a moment but if you take a look it also has the requirements here, so it says GIMP should run on any NT based version of Windows, so it also talks about how previous versions can work with previous versions of Windows and a minimum of 128 megabytes of RAM is recommended. So as you can see here, GIMP is going to be available on a lot of different platforms as well as on a lot of different computers that you may not have thought could run a powerful image editing application. Now because we are going to be using Windows for this I'm going to go ahead and download the installer here so click on installer and it will take me to the installers for GIMP for Windows and we have the base package here, GIMP for Windows and it's giving us the version and it also tells us a little bit more in terms of requirements here and it's just talking about the operating system. It's also got the file size here so it's just barely fifteen and a half megabytes so I'll go ahead and download that. And I'll go ahead and save that and it's saving to my Downloads folder, that's good, I'll go ahead and save, we'll install that in just a minute. I'm going to go back here and there are a couple of other things that you may be interested in here. So here we have the additional packages which is going to include GIMP help and GIMP for Windows for 64-bit systems so depending on what you need for your system this may be somewhat helpful. Now the most important thing here is the GIMP help system because this is going to install a local help system for you on your computer. Now you do have the ability here to download all languages in a single file or download in smaller chunks because that is a pretty big file. You also have the English language only so if you're only going to be using English you can just download this and because this title is primarily in English I'm going to go ahead and do that because this is a smaller download as well so I'll go ahead and download that. And it will be downloaded to the Downloads folder again so whenever I'm ready to install it will be there for me. And I'm going to go back to the GIMP site here. Now another great thing about the GIMP website is the amount of documentation that's available. If you click on Documentation you will see that there's the GIMP user manual here which you can go straight to. You also have a number of tutorials and books that are available, FAQ's, and configuration. So my recommendation for whenever you're seeking help, use the help files that we just downloaded and that we will install later and take advantage of the fact that there's a lot of great documentation out there on the web. So that concludes this tutorial on looking at system requirements and a basic overview of the GIMP website.
