Introduction / Your Workspace & Your Health

Subtitles of the Movie

Your Workspace and Your Health. In this lesson we're going to learn some of the equipment that might be included in your workspace or a Finale studio. We're also going to discuss some considerations for setting up your workspace. As a professional composer, arranger and music copyist, I spend long hours working in Finale. Obviously, for someone like me it's important to give some consideration to how my workspace is set up if I want to maintain my workflow as well as my health with these long hours. Some of the typical items that we might include in our studio will include standard office equipment like a desk and a chair but will include some additional items not usually found in a traditional office environment such as a MIDI keyboard and a music stand, or some type of document holder for when we're working from written music documents. Additionally, some users may find a wireless keyboard and mouse helps increase their workflow and allows them to set up multiple workstations in their office. Now, a couple of considerations that we'll want to think about - the placement of our Qwerty keyboard and our MIDI keyboard location, remembering, of course, that we'll have one hand on our MIDI keyboard, one hand on our Qwerty keyboard when working in Finale. It's important to give some consideration to where we'll place our monitor when working in this position. We obviously don't want to be twisting our body in a way that's going to be uncomfortable. Additionally, I'd recommend giving some consideration to your monitor height, trying to ensure that your monitor is placed at eye level. Many users will find that the addition of a second monitor for different activities or workstations can be beneficial. Some users may find attaching a document holder to the computer screen will help minimize neck and eyestrain when working from hand-written scores. I'd suggest getting an adjustable chair that can swivel and move across the floor to different workstations. And, finally, ensure that you have adequate levels of light for the work that you're doing. If we use a little common sense when setting up our workspace we can help increase our workflow and avoid some of the pitfalls of repetitive stress injuries.
