Entering Music / Smart Shape Tools
Subtitles of the Movie
The Smart Shape Tool. In this lesson we'll learn how to use the Smart Shape Tool to create Slurs, Hairpin Crescendo and Decrescendos and other Score markings. For this lesson we will again be using the demo.mus file that we created at the beginning of this sequence of the course. We also have the Notes, Expressions and Articulations that we've added in subsequent lessons. We can select the Smart Shape Tool by clicking the icon in the Main Tool Palette. The icon looks like a Slur. If it was not already on your screen clicking the Smart Shape Tool icon will open the Smart Shape Tool Palette. In my case, the Smart Shape Tool Palette is on the right side of my screen, but you can move it to anywhere on your screen that you might like. Let's add a Slur to the second Measure of our excerpt. If I double-click the first Note of the second Measure of our excerpt it will add a Slur to the second Note of that Measure. We can see that we also have several Attachment Points that we can select to change the shape of our Slur if we don't like the way it appears on our screen. If I right-click on the Slur I can open a Submenu for a number of options, including the option to remove those manual Slur Adjustments I just made. Let's add a Crescendo in the first Measure. If I double-click below the first Note and hold the mouse button down while dragging to the right I can create a Hairpin Crescendo. If I select the Decrescendo Tool I can also double-click holding down on the second click and drag to the left to create a Decrescendo. If I hold the left mouse button down while dragging over the two selection boxes and then right-click I have the option to align these horizontally. We also have an option to align vertically if we had Crescendo or Decrescendos between multiple Staves on a system. We can use the Smart Shape Tool to add a number of different types of Articulations including custom Articulations. For example, we can add a Glissando, we can add Alatava notations and if we need to remove these we can simply select it and press the Delete key on our QWERTY Keyboard. Finally, before we leave this exercise we're going to add a little more information to our file. Let's go to the File Menu and go to File Info. For a Title let's call this VTC Demo. For Composer how about you add your name. And I'm going to click OK. Finally, let's get rid of the Subtitle box by clicking on the Text Tool and selecting the appropriate handle and pressing Delete. Let's also get rid of the Arranger tab. Before we leave this lesson let's remember to press Ctrl-S or Cmd-S on the Macintosh side to save our work.
