What is FileMaker Server & Why Use It? / FileMaker Server's Role in Security pt. 2

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, part two of FileMaker Server's role in security, we'll continue our discussion of how FileMaker Server aids in security. You'll recall from our previous discussion that security is focused on preserving three major items: the confidentiality, the integrity and the availability of digital assets and sometimes of physical assets as well. Part one talked about FileMaker Server's role in preserving confidentiality and availability. In this movie, part two, we will focus on FileMaker Server's role in preserving the integrity of data. What does preserving the integrity of data mean? The owners of the data must be able to rely on the concept that the systems manage data in conformity with business rules. For example, a business rule may be that an invoice, once created, can never be deleted or an invoice with invoice items can not be deleted, but an invoice that has no invoice items could be deleted. Business rules are extremely varied. They could be extremely complex, but the database is supposed to enforce them. Another example might be that contacts can only be added from the context of a pre-existing company and can not be created in isolation by themselves. So the system must manage whatever the business rules are supposed to be. The owners of data must be able to rely on the results that the data depict and they can only do so if they can be sure that the data themselves are valid and valid means entered in accordance with the business rules that the database must enforce and not spuriously or surreptitiously or specially entered by some other means. The security structure of the database system must enforce these constraints. The system must prevent tampering with the structures. Such tampering would include the previously spurious or surreptitious entry of data by methods and means other than those that the business rules permit. So hosting files on FileMaker Server removes the physical fouls from the immediate physical accessibility by users or others and it also requires that every user access the database in the same fashion. This helps preserve the integrity of the data. So let's review briefly what we've learned in this movie about data integrity. We've learned that FileMaker Server plays a role in assuring data integrity by such things as common access requirements and physical isolation of files. And we've learned why data integrity is important; that the owners of the data must be able to rely on the results that the data depict and that the data have been entered in an approved fashion, thus FileMaker Server assists in the business rule enforcement. More broadly, on both parts one and two of this movie series we've learned how FileMaker's Server aids in the preservation of data confidentiality, integrity and availability through authentication, especially external server authentication, through server access challenge, through file access challenge, through encryption of data in transit and through the preservation of a safe hosting environment. 7] access challenge, through encryption of data in transit and through the preservation of a safe hosting environment.
