What is FileMaker Server & Why Use It? / FileMaker Server pt. 1
Subtitles of the Movie
This is the beginning of the movie on FileMaker Server 9 in part one we'll talk about what is FileMaker Server, what is FileMaker Server advanced and why would we want to use either of them. We'll continue this discussion in part two of this movie with more information. FileMaker Server is a software designed for the safe and reliable hosting of FileMaker Pro files. It makes databases and their respective data available for simultaneous access by multiple users for a variety of clients including FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Pro advanced version 7, 8, 8.5 and 9, running on a variety of operating systems including Windows XP, Windows Vista and Macintosh OS X, 10.3, 10.4 or 10.5. Specific versions of Filemaker Pro requires specific versions of operating systems. Some versions are not supported and some operating systems don't work well with earlier versions. In addition FileMaker Server provides access by web browsers including Safari 2, Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 1.5 and Firefox 2 and this provides support for PHP, XML and XML, XSLT from FileMaker Server. Additionally it provides for access by Instant Web Publishing from FileMaker Server Advanced, when using modern browsers supporting cascading style sheets and JavaScript. Instant Web Publishing is not supported on older versions of many browsers. In addition connectivity is supported via ODBC from a variety of other applications; this requires FileMaker Server Advanced if FileMaker Pro is to be the source of the data. However it does not require FileMaker Server Advanced if Filemaker is accessing other data by ODBC connectivity. In addition connectivity from .net savvy applications using the FM.net classes is supported. For example Microsoft office and a number of custom applications, more information about FM.net classes can be found at www.connecting data.com slash fm.net.htm. Filemaker Server supports 250 simultaneous FileMaker Pro and ODBC guests of which not more then 50 can be via ODBC. It also supports 100 simultaneous Instant Web Publishing guests and Instant Web Publishing is stateful so these connections are persistent. It also supports a 100 simultaneous connections from custom Web Publishing but since its ruled these connections are stateful in practice more then 100 guests can be handled because they make a connection and then disconnect and don't reconnect until they need more data. 125 FileMaker Pro files can be hosted by any single instance of FileMaker Server 9 or Filemaker Server 9 Advanced each of these of course can have multiple tables in it. Filemaker Server also provides for the automated back up of files on a predetermined schedule set by a server administrators, it provides for encryption of all data in transit using industry standard algorithms. It does not however provide for encryption of data at rest. It provides for the filtering of access to file names and the availability to access those files based on credentials entered and in effect what this is, is a requirement to authenticate to the server before accessing any database file. For example you might be challenged by a dialogue to enter credentials before accessing database files. You'll be asked to provide a credential to view databases hosted. As shown in this particular example what you must do is access the server and prove that you are a legitimate user before you're given access to the databases. So let's review briefly what we've learned in this movie. We've talked about Filemaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced and how their designed to safely and reliably host FileMaker Pro files for access by a variety of client software including FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Pro Advanced, by modern Web browsers, by PHP, by XML, by XML and XSLT and by Instant Web Publishing with browsers that support cascading style sheets and JavaScript. We've learned that ODBC connectivity is another method for accessing the files as well as the fm.net classes when used with .net savvy applications. We've learned that Filemaker Server provides managed, reliable backups of databases. We've learned that it provides encryption of data in transit but not of data at rest. That it provides for filtering of access to files which is challenge for access to the server first before accessing the files. In the part two movie we'll look more at FileMaker Server and FileMaker Server Advanced including the differences between them and their role in account authentication. he files. In the part two movie we'll look more at FileMaker Server and FileMaker Server Advanced including the differences between them and their role in account authentication.
