New In Version 9 / Uniform Administration Console pt. 1
Subtitles of the Movie
Long-time users of FileMaker Server and FileMaker Server Advanced will have noticed in this series of movies that the interface for the administration of the server has dramatically changed. With the advent of version 9, FileMaker Inc introduced the Uniform administration console, a Java-based application that runs on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. It can either on the server itself or it can run on a workstation running OS X, Windows XP Pro or Windows Vista that can connect to the server. This new interface starts and stops the server, opens and closes the files, manages security settings, manages Web Publishing settings, sets backup schedules and can run server-side scripts for FileMaker Pro. As we've noted, those server-side scripts must consist wholly and completely of web-compatible script steps; otherwise an error will occur when the script is run. So the first question about the Admin Console is how do I launch it? Well, there's several ways and they work equally work on either platform. The first way is to launch a web browser and in that web browser, enter the IP address of the server followed by colon 16,000. If you're accessing it from the same machine the server is on, you can enter a local host instead, which is what we'll do here. And as you see, the page comes up and by clicking here, you can start the admin console. But for now, we'll close the web browser and we'll take a look at a second way to launch. You can also make a shortcut of the particular link, save it on your desktop or in any other convenient location and when you click on it, it will launch the same page that we just saw and you can click the start admin console. When you click the start Admin Console , if there is no console start page on your machine, FileMaker Server will download one for you and from there you can access the console. So again, we'll quit the web browser and this time we'll launch the console from the web start page that's downloaded. So you see that it is beginning to launch and the first thing it will ask you for is to enter your credentials. So we'll intentionally enter some incorrect credentials and you see that we receive an error such as invalid user name or password. So this time we'll enter the correct credentials and as you see, the console launches. On Windows it works exactly the same as we've seen here. So the first thing when we launch the console that we want to pay attention to is this icon in the upper left-hand corner to start the database server. Sometimes users have reported getting this error message, that the database server is not available. If such a message shows up, the first thing to do is check to be sure that the database server has actually started. Launching the console does not necessarily start the database server. We can also now start the Web Publishing Engine as well and this capability exists as we previously noted in both the Standard and the Advanced version. So we see first a general overview of the server, which will tell the IP address of the various parts as well as other information about it. general overview of the server, which will tell the IP address of the various parts as well as other information about it.
