New In Version 9 / FileMaker Server 9 Advanced

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, we'll talk about what's new in FileMaker Server 9 Advanced version. In an earlier movie, we talked about what was new in the Standard version and as was the case before, the biggest change in the Advanced version is that the custom Web Publishing items, including PHP, as well as XML and XSLT were moved from the Advanced version to the Standard version. These functions are still present in FileMaker Server 9 of course and that gives the opportunity to restate an important point that sometimes causes confusion. Each and every functionality of FileMaker Server 9 Standard edition is also present in the Advanced edition. These are really not different executables. They're simply different license codes and in order to be able to use the Instant Web Publishing facilities of FileMaker Server or to have ODBC and JDBC connectivity from such items as spreadsheets, word processor, reporting tools and the like to FileMaker databases, you must use the Advanced version. The Advanced version has all of the features that the Standard version has, but it adds the ability to run Instant Web Publishing and to make the ODBC and JDBC connections. Now, in FileMaker Server 9, as I said, the Instant Web Publishing capabilities remain as was the case in FileMaker Server 8 Advanced. Instant Web Publishing is quick, it displays a remarkable fidelity of the user interface from the FileMaker database to the web page using modern web browsers such as Safari 2 and 3, Firefox 2, IE 6 and IE 7. Older browsers that can not correctly manage both cascading style sheets and JavaScript don't work so well with Instant Web Publishing and you should avoid attempting to make a connection to an Instant Web Publishing hosted database from these older browsers. In addition, with Instant Web Publishing you can customize the display and the logon pages where users must go to enter credentials to access the files and in a subsequent movie, we'll take a much closer look at the Instant Web Publishing capabilities. Additionally, the ODBC, JDBC connectivity require FileMaker Server Advanced if the FileMaker Pro data is the source that is to be consumed by other applications. Now, this feature should not be confused with the ability new in FileMaker Pro 9 and FileMaker Server 9 to connect using ODBC to some other external sequel source, such as Microsoft Sequel Server where that external application is itself the data source. The ODBC JDBC connectivity in FileMaker Server is for when FileMaker is the source. Server Advanced is not required for the use of the functionality to connect to the external sequel source, such as the Microsoft Sequel Server or Oracle for example. So let's review briefly what we've learned about the new features and the new segmentation of features into the Advanced version of FileMaker Server 9. We've learned that the biggest change was the movement from the Advanced version to the Standard version of the custom Web Publishing options, including PHP, as well as XML and XSLT capability. We've learned that Instant Web Publishing remains in its quick and remarkable capabilities in the Advanced version of FileMaker Server and we've also learned that ODBC JDBC connectivity, when FileMaker is the source of the data, requires the Advanced version. We also learned that to make a connection from FileMaker to an external sequel source, such as Oracle or Microsoft Sequel Server does not require the Advanced version. make a connection from FileMaker to an external sequel source, such as Oracle or Microsoft Sequel Server does not require the Advanced version.
