New In Version 9 / FileMaker Server 9

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, we'll take a look at some of the new features in the Standard version of FileMaker Server 9. Perhaps one of the biggest changes from prior versions is that Web Publishing has been moved to the Standard version; custom web publishing including PHP, XSLT and XML. Instant Web Publishing, as well as the ODBC capability remains, however, in the Advanced version only. So one of the new features of FileMaker 9 is the ability to integrate with PHP using the FileMaker PHP API. This API allows web pages that have been constructed using the PHP language to communicate with files hosted by FileMaker Server. In addition, developers can also use certain other PHP enablers, such as the FX PHP classes. In this panel in the configuration console is where many of the settings for PHP on the server are enabled and as you can see, these are listed under Web Publishing in the PHP tab. Additionally, XML communication, as has been the case in earlier versions, enables developers to utilize XML not only with Web Publishing and web browsers, but also for any other applications that can consume raw XML data. This can include certain elements in the Microsoft Office suite, some of the .net applications. In fact, the FM.net classes, which were developed by Wim Decorte to be used to facilitate communications between FileMaker Server and .net savvy applications make extensive use XML. In addition, the XML XSLT capabilities are also present now in the Standard version. XSLT is used to transform raw XML output for use in formatted documents. This could be a web browser, which is a frequent source of reading transformed documents, but it need not be just a web browser. It could be a Word document, it could be desktop publishing programs it could be small form-factor devices such as the BlackBerry or the Apple telephone. One other big change is the introduction in both the Standard and Advanced versions of the ability to run a ScriptMaker script server-side. All the steps in such a script must be web compatible, otherwise an error will occur. So if you click the perform action to create a schedule, you can tell FileMaker Server to run a script and you select the type of script to be run, which would be a ScriptMaker script from within a hosted FileMaker database and on this server we'll simply take the FileMaker Server sample file and as you see, you can have it run with the guest account or with an account name and password. It's important that the account selected have the privileges necessary to run the script and in a subsequent movie, we'll explore this in much greater detail. So we pick a script and let's just say go to list layout and as you see, we marched through this wizard. We can assign various frequencies, we can assign a start and end date, we can assign times of day for the script to run and when we're through, we give it a name and let's just call it test for right now and we'll skip the email notification that can be utilized to send an email to the administrator to advise the administrator that the script has run and as you see at the end, we have a summary of the information that we would need to see about the script. Rather than finishing this and tell it to run, we'll simply tell it to cancel and we'll come back to a server-side scripts in a subsequent movie. To review, we've looked at some of the new features in FileMaker Server 9 Standard edition, the two most significant of which are that the custom Web Publishing with PHP, the XML capabilities and the XML XSLT capabilities were moved from the Advanced version to the Standard version. The other major new feature is the ability to trigger FileMaker Pro's ScriptMaker scripts from the server, bearing in mind that all the steps in such scripts must be web compatible; otherwise when the server attempts to run them, an error will occur. r, bearing in mind that all the steps in such scripts must be web compatible; otherwise when the server attempts to run them, an error will occur.
