Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, we'll conclude our discussion of administration options for FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced running on OS X Server. We have an instance of the console running on OS X Server connected to FileMaker Server 9 Advanced running on the same machine also under OS X Server. We're in the administration area and now we've selected the statistics window. This window, as you can see, is divided into two parts. At the top of the page we have information that shows the number of connections by client type; custom Web Publishing, FileMaker Pro clients, Instant Web Publishing and ODBC and JDBC and we see the current, the average, the low and the peak numbers. This gives us some information about how our files are being accessed by what particular type of client. If you click on the heading, of course, it will sort by various functionalities, a very common configuration in the FileMaker Pro world. At the bottom, you see the database statistics, including important information about the cache and in subsequent movies in the best practices section, we'll be talking about the cache and some of the information that we like to know about it. We also have information about network traffic, about wait times and items of that nature and it's important to note that these times here are in microseconds, so in essence they should be divided by one million to get the time in actual seconds. The data here are very useful for monitoring the overall status of the server and of the various traffic going to and from the database. As I indicated, we'll have some further discussion of this in the best practices section, but in addition to that, you and or your IT administrators might want to consult the server administrators guide that comes with the FileMaker Pro products to learn more about some of these particular metrics that are shown in the database statistics panel. There is detailed information about this, detailed information about how to interpret these data and when the data fall inside and outside of normal ranges and realms, some of the things that you can do to address that particular situation. But these data are invaluable in terms of collecting and monitoring what is happening. You'll recall in the logging section that when we enabled the three different types of logs that we can collect much of this information as well over a long historical period. This particular information is more current than that that is covered in the log. It is a real-time set of information. So to review what we've learned in this particular movie, we've learned that in the statistics panel, we can gather all types of information about the connectivity to the databases by various types of clients, both FileMaker Pro clients, Instant Web Publishing, custom Web Publishing using PHP, XML and XSLT or ODBC and JDBC. We've also seen that we can gather information about the various statistics, including the cache and network traffic and the responsiveness and wait time of the system. about the various statistics, including the cache and network traffic and the responsiveness and wait time of the system.
