FileMaker Server 9 Tutorials

Introduction & Overview / How Are These Tutorials Organized?

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, we'll preview the organization of this particular tutorial on FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced. There's a logical and progressive path of information presented in these movies about FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced and we're going to preview that here in this particular movie. Some of the information in this tutorial appears on slides, such as the one that you're seeing now. Other information appears from inside FileMaker Server itself on both Windows Server 2003 and Macintosh OS X Server platforms. We start our discussion in this tutorial by talking about what is FileMaker Server and why do we want to use it. We then move to a discussion of what is new in FileMaker Server 9 as compared to some of the earlier versions, including new product segmentation, the brand-new Administration Console and a variety of new features that Server 9 and Server 9 Advanced offer. We then move to a discussion of various installation options for installing and deploying FileMaker Server and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced. We then discuss the new Administration Console in great detail, including a description of what is it, a description of how it is different from the Server admin tool in FileMaker Server 7 and 7 Advanced and FileMaker Server 8 and 8 Advanced. We talk about how to launch the console, which is a very important concept, we talk about a few platform differences between Windows and Macintosh and then we spend a lot of time talking about what does the Administration Console do. We then begin a lengthy discussion of FileMaker Server configuration on the Windows Server 2003 platform, including configuration of the database server, security configurations, the default directories and how to create custom directories, logging, server-side plug-ins and all of the configuration of the Web Publishing engine and finally, configuration of the ODBC and JDBC connectivity options in the Advanced version. That is followed by another lengthy discussion about FileMaker Server administration on the Windows Server 2003 platform, including clients, databases, schedules, backup creations, server-side script management and OS-level script management, as well as a discussion about monitoring server statistics. When we finish that, we go back and do the same thing again except this time we're looking at the configuration on the Macintosh OS X Server platform. Again, we cover the database server, security, the default directories or folders, logging options, server-side plug-ins and all of the configuration of the Web Publishing Engine and the ODBC JDBC connectivity in the Advanced options. After we talk about configuration, we talk about administration of FileMaker Server on Macintosh OS X Server just as we did on Windows server 2003. And we cover clients, databases, schedules, backup creation, server-side script management, OS-level script management. And again, the all important statistics monitoring. We conclude then, after you've learned how to configure and to administer server, with a lengthy discussion of best practices for FileMaker Server deployment on both platforms, including two very important ones; the use of a dedicated server machine and optimal hard drive sub-system configuration. These two best practices, more than anything else influence the outcome of your server deployment. We also talk about Operating System relation items, about memory and cache, how to computer the cache, the configuration of the cache, its purposes. We talk about a wide variety of hardware items. We talk about network typology and that concludes the flow and the logic of the information in the server tutorials. So I hope you have the opportunity to look through all of these and that you will gain the information that you need for effective server deployment and management. the opportunity to look through all of these and that you will gain the information that you need for effective server deployment and management.
