FileMaker Server 9 Tutorials

Introduction & Overview / What is Not Covered?

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, I will explain the materials that will not be covered in this series of tutorials. There are many new features and functionalities in FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced and this entire server tutorial will examine each of these in great detail. However, there are some key items that remain essentially unchanged from earlier versions of FileMaker Server. Among these are external server authentication processes including the proper setup for FileMaker Server on both Macintosh Open Directory, Windows Active Directory or as a standalone server on the respective platform. Also, account configuration for external server authentication remains unchanged in its method from earlier versions and the FileMaker Pro file configuration aspects, likewise, remain unchanged. An additional item that is unchanged from previous versions are the various file settings for the sharing of data by various clients. These are found in the extended privileges in the FileMaker Pro files. The new FMPHP has been automatically added, but it is not enabled. In earlier versions, it was necessary to add this manually. Additional key items that remain unchanged are the hosting of runtime data files. This is an aspect that causes some confusion because people incorrectly believe that the runtime executable itself can act as a guest of these hosted files, but that is not correct. The data in runtime files can be hosted by FileMaker Server, but you must access those files either with FileMaker Pro or some other type of approved client. Registration with LDAP directory remains unchanged from earlier versions as well. The LDAP registration is essentially a yellow pages feature for administrators to register their servers so that users can find it with greater ease. The registration with LDAP, contrary to much misunderstanding, has nothing to do with the external server authentication or single sign-on properties that can be employed with FileMaker Server. It is an information service only. The command line commands on Windows remain essentially unchanged; however, the Macintosh terminal commands have changed somewhat and we'll cover that in detail in a later movie. So for those items that remained essentially unchanged from FileMaker Server 8 or FileMaker Server 8 Advanced, we will not cover them in any great detail in these movies. We will, however, refer to them and explain them where needed in the context of FileMaker Server 9 or FileMaker Server 9 Advanced. So I would recommend that if you are interested in learning more about these, that you review the series of movies for FileMaker Server 8 done by Wim Decorte. So in the remaining movies in this server tutorial, we'll be focused on FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced; how to configure them, how to administer them, what they do, how to use them and an entire series of best practices about their use. administer them, what they do, how to use them and an entire series of best practices about their use.
