Under the hood FileMaker Server 12 comes with a re-architected Database Server. In addition to ODBC running as a separate process now scripts and plug-ins also run as a separate process. What it used to be running in the same Database Engines process. And Progressive Backups run independently as well. So if one of these processes happens to fail, it will not affect the Database Server. The server will continue to serve data just as expected. FileMaker Server 12 takes advantage of the newly re-architected Container Fields in FileMaker Pro 12. Leveraging the Apache Tomcat Server that was already part of the FileMaker Server, Server 12 now has even more processing power. Allowing you to stream videos and other media to your FileMaker Pro Clients immediately when they want to. So now you can flip through records without waiting for files to completely download before moving to the next records. And this is a feature that you only get with FileMaker Server. In addition to the streaming you have another big benefit from using FileMaker Server with those Enhanced Containers. You can choose to let the server generate and cache the thumbnails for your Container Data. The Thumbnails will be used instead of the Full Container Data for displaying in List Views for instance. So all in all we have a bunch of New Features in FileMaker Server 12 and we will look at them in detail throughout the rest of this tutorial.
