Introduction / Important New Features
Subtitles of the Movie
In this movie we will discuss the most important new features in FileMaker Server 10. Server 10 builds on the features that were introduced with Version 9 and expands them in a significant way. More features in the Server Admin Tool, more server-side script steps like import, export and emailing and all of that in addition to the obvious support of FileMaker 10 features like script triggers. But let's concentrate on the server-specific features that FileMaker Server 10 introduces and we have separate movies on all of them in this tutorial. Let me point them out to you in this Admin Console where you configure FileMaker Server. This whole Administration Interface was introduced with Server 9 and it can be used from a remote machine. It looks and behaves the same on both Windows and Mac. In Server 10, some more features were added to this Admin Console. The number of users has been increased significantly to 1,000 in FileMaker Server Advanced; well, 999 for those of you who are counting. That number remains at 250 for regular FileMaker Server. New is that you can easily see all of the FileMaker Server event logs right here from inside the Admin Console with the ability to filter and also the ability to export even though you might be on a remote machine. The backups behave slightly differently. Each backup now ends up in its own date and time-stamped folder like we see here. And when you set up your backup, you can now choose how many backup sets FileMaker Server will keep for you. In the schedules we can now add a schedule to verify the databases, which will basically run a consistency check to make sure that your files are still in good health. And where we could already run scripts in FileMaker Server 9, we can now mix and match operating system scripts and FileMaker scripts at the same time in one script sequence. There are a few important new features that don't show up in this Admin Console, like the fact that much of what you see in the Admin Console is also available from the Command Line, with some new commands added like verify and remove. When editing scripts in FileMaker Pro 10, we now have the ability to indicate which script steps are either client compatible, web compatible or brand-new server compatible. And last but not least, for those of you who are in to web publishing, there is a brand-new PHP site assistant to help you with your PHP code. All of these features will be covered in separate movies later in this tutorial.
