FileMaker Pro 9: Intermediate Tutorials

Introduction / Why an Invoicing Solution? pt. 2

Subtitles of the Movie

So really, you have a fully-functional solution here that we're really going to create this whole thing. In fact, we're even going to go so far as to create all the reports; reports by product, report by invoice, here's a letter section. All this stuff is going to be done and you'll know how to do this if you go through all three tutorials. And we also want to show you another product that we'll be using throughout so let's move on. The second demonstration shows you the FileMaker reference. Now, I'll be using this throughout the creation of this database. This solution is also not unlocked. What we'll be doing is grabbing scripts, calculations and graphics from this FileMaker reference. Why is it not unlocked? Well, I'm going to give you whatever we grab out of it, ok? It's going to be in there. I'm just not going to give you the whole solution but it's an easy way to show you how to grab it quickly out of a database. I can just throw all my graphics in there and simply drag them in there. But I will give you all those graphics, all those calculations. Nothing will be kept from you. You just don't get the whole, entire reference. So let's take a look at it real quickly. You'll see on the homepage of the FileMaker references you have all these sections: calculations, scripts, shortcuts, graphics is down here, new features. There's all kinds of areas. We're going to be mostly in the calculations area, scripts area and really, probably 90 percent of the time just getting graphics. So let's go ahead and look at the graphics here and you can see what I have is a whole bunch of graphic container fields. And I have these pieces stored in here. And you can see that they correspond to what you'll see up here. And if you walk through it, you'll see that all these pieces are here. There's even a 3-D look that goes around the side. All these are built like Legos and it's all be dragging this out of the FileMaker reference and into the invoice solution that we'll be working on. And to get back to the homepage, you simply click this and you go into the calculations section where we'll most likely be. Here is the example section and we'll be searching for different examples because that way instead of me simply typing out the whole formula, I can grab it, copy it and paste it. And it can save us some time because you could always pause the tutorial and look at the formula and copy it down. There's not reason why I have to spend so much time typing it out and that way we can actually go over more material that way. So helpfully this will help you out, uh, in understanding that these two different solutions are not included inside the tutorial. They are there, but they're not unlocked. Now, let's talk about the work files. Each chapter has work files. For instance, the slides we're working on right now, looking through in Chapter One here, they're all included in the work files so you can look at them yourself. They're all FileMaker files, so they're easy to open up. But there are also other kinds of work files, like I might provide some graphics in a jpg file. I might have a table that you might want to import or I might actually have a solution that's being created in there. So, in fact, every single chapter will have the solution that we're creating. There'll be a start folder and an end folder in each chapter. Well, except for the first one, in the beginner. There won't be a start because we're starting from scratch. But every one after that will have a start and an end. And so the start will contain the actual invoice solution, which will start out as a contact manager in the beginner. That will be stored in the start so you have the actual file if you, let's say, want to start on Chapter Five, we have the file that's been built up through Chapters One through Four and so you have the beginning of Chapter Five so if you just want to review Chapter Five, you have that file there. And, in fact, you also have the end. If you want to review your work or something like that, you will have a folder in each chapter called End which will have the same invoicing solution in it that's built up through that chapter. So you really have both ends; the beginning and ending of that chapter, that file, so you can start anywhere in the tutorial you want. Again, I recommend you go from beginning to end, but it's very easy for me to provide this and could be useful for you if you want to go back and review what you've done.
