Interface Design / Finishing Touches pt.1
Subtitles of the Movie
Let's put the finishing touches on this interface, or at least some of them, by adding a title, a timestamp and who created the record and modified it, add our buttons that we had on the previous interface and also add our calculation that shows how many records are found and the next and previous buttons to go between records. We want to add all that stuff in here. So we'll start with the easiest one, which is the title. So we'll go to layout mode, show the status area, click on our text tool and we're going to type in customer and we're typing in customers rather than contacts because customers looks better with our ultimate solution, which is going to be a complete invoicing solution. So we'll go ahead and click out of that and we're going to make this text block bigger and change the size to 36 point. And then we'll position that where we want it. Right about there in the center. Make sure it's matched up with that, maybe a couple pixels over. That looks pretty good. Now, once you've got it just where you want it, maybe a couple pixels higher, I'm going to duplicate that and we're going to move it five pixels to the left and five pixels up; not six. One, two, three, four, five; one, two, three, four, five. And then we're going to change the text color. Change that to this gray color at the top of the column and then send to back. Now, what you've got is a nice looking shadow on this. Didn't have to use any features except using two text blocks that are exactly the same. And you could have used color here, sure. But it would have detracted. You want to use color where it's very important to attract people's eyes there. And you can do the same without attracting too much attention to the title by putting a little flavor in there with a shadow. So don't always use color. Use color where it's most important so it has the effectiveness that you want. Ok. So let's move down to the bottom and we'll click our text tool and click down here and we're going to change to a smaller font size. So we'll go down into 9 point and I'm going to type in created colon space and then we'll insert a merge field. And we're going to choose our timestamp created field. There we go. Right there. And then we'll type a space, by, and then another space and then we'll insert another merge field. That will be our account, which is up here. Who created that? Then I'll type a space and a pipe character. Another space. And then we'll put in modified by colon insert your merge field and we'll come down here and find the timestamp mod, then the space by, space, insert another merge field. And we'll go back up to the top and choose account mod. There we go. Looks pretty good. Let's extend that a little bit. Make it smaller so it's just the height. There we go. Move it down where we want it. And it looks pretty good. Now, we really don't need it to stand out, so I'm gong to change the text color to this gray. You don't need it to stand out and be bold. You need to really kind of blend it. But when somebody needs the information, they'll know where it is.
