The rectangle tool works a lot like the line tool. All you have to do is go ahead and click on it and then move out here and you'll see the crosshairs. And then you click and drag, and you can drag down to the lower right, or lower left, or go upwards, or go to the right, whichever direction you go, you get yourself a rectangle, so you can start from any point you want. And if you hold down the Shift key, you might think that you get a perfect square, but that actually doesn't happen, you actually get somewhat of a line. What you actually want to do is hold down the Option key or Control key. So Option on Mac, and Control on Windows, and then you can get a perfect rectangle. OK, and then when you let go you get your rectangle. Now it has the settings from this line, and that's because unbenounced to you, you set the default for the tool when we change the color of this. Now, if you don't like that color and you want something else, all you have to do is Command click on a different object, or on Windows, Control click. So you hold down the Apple or Command key, or the Control key on Windows, and click on the object you like. Doesn't have to be another rectangle, there's only one default. I'm going to click on these fields and now when I draw a rectangle, it has a black square. So you can use this technique to set your default so you can get exactly what kind of settings on your object you want. So what we're going to do here is select this rectangle and make sure you don't click in the middle because there's no fill. You have to click on the edge to select it and then hit Delete or Backspace, and the same here, no fill so you can't click in the middle, and we'll do the same there. What we're going to do is draw a rectangle around everything that we can type into. So we'll move this information down a little bit, get it about centered, we'll move down our line here, right about there, and then we'll move our fields down and our field labels. So select them all and we'll drag it down right about there, that looks pretty good, and then we're going to draw ourselves a rectangle. We'll go ahead and draw it around the fields, something like that, and you see it's surrounding the whole field list. Now what I want is a nice little gray fill, so let's put a gray color on there, let's try this one right here, and what happens is it hides those fields. That's because when you draw an object in FileMaker, there are layers, and the most recently drawn object or even inserted from another program goes on the top layer. So since we drew it over all those fields, it's hiding them. And so we can actually change the layering if we want, we can move things forward and backward, all you have to do is make sure that your rectangle's selected, and then we go up to Arrange, and we choose Send Backward, and it's gone back one layer, so one field shows up. We can do that again, and now the field label comes on. Keep going with that, and we can do this for a while, it's going to take a little while, or we could just say send all the way to the back and now it's on the back layer of everything. So now our field's obviously shown on the top. Now, what if we want to change our fields to white because they gray color doesn't really make them stand out? If we come over here and try to draw a selection rectangle, you'll see they're actually grabbing this square. We could come over here and draw from here if we want, but what if your rectangle is really big and you didn't have that opportunity to come outside here? Well we can click on that rectangle and go up to Arrange and choose Lock. What happens is you get these little gray anchors here meaning that you can't move it. And so when we try to move it now it's impossible to do so. So we can now start from here and draw a selection rectangle around our fields, and we can choose white. And now those are going to stand out a lot better. Now, if you want to be able to move your rectangle later, you have to click on it and then choose Unlock, but we're going to leave it locked for right now. Now there are other tools over here, you have your rounded rectangle. If you grab that and draw you get a rounded rectangle, and the same things apply. You can go ahead and resize it just by grabbing the anchor points. You can hold down the Control key or the Option key, all of a sudden it resizes to a perfect rounded rectangle, or a square rounded, I'm not sure what that really is. We'll call it a perfect rounded rectangle, even on all sides. And the same is true for the oval, we can draw one, if we hold down the Shift key it doesn't really draw anything other than the line, but if we hold down the Option or Control key, Option for Mac, Control for Windows, we get a perfect circle. And then, of course, we could change the colors if we wanted to. We don't really need these objects so we're going to delete them, ust hit the Backspace key when they're selected, or the Delete key, and now we can see what it looks like in Browse mode. We'll save the changes, and now you can see it's a lot easier to see where your fields are, where to click into them. So, although this isn't the best interface I've ever designed, it isn't even close, it's your job to figure out what colors and what options on these rectangles, and tools, and lines will make it look really good for you, and you can make it look really nice, I have seen great interfaces done with just FileMaker graphic tools. You can do them, you can layer objects on top of each other and do all kinds of stuff. So spend some time fiddling around with doing a good interface, but make sure to make a backup because we're going to keep this gray look here just to keep it simple.
