Sharing a FileMaker database over the web is very very simple. I come to the sharing menu and I choose instant web publishing. There are two parts of the dialogue that I need to deal with. At the top I have the settings for instant web publishing for all databases that I will be publishing from this computer. I can turn instant web publishing on or of from here. If I turn it on then it will take a moment for FileMaker to determine the address of this computer and this is the address this URL, this is the address that people will use to connect to this database. I can choose the language for the status area the people see in their web browser and I can specify various advanced options. The port number is something you may need to deal with. The web normally uses port80 for its traffic. If you already have a web server running on your computer port 80 will be busy. So you will need to use an alternate port number for people to access your FileMaker database. 591 is a number that FileMaker has registered so it's a safe one to use. You can also specify that only certain IP addresses can access your shared databases. This is over and above the security of privilege sets and account names that you set. You can determine logging down here is an important feature you can disconnect people if they are inactive for certain number of minutes. You cannot set the maximum number of connections which are shown up here. But it tell you is the FileMaker pro and FileMaker developer have a maximum number of five connections, to use more you need to use FileMaker server advanced. These are the advanced options that you can set. So I now have instant web publishing turned on. I can select any of the files that are open on this computer and allow access from all users, no users or specific users using a privilege set. I can also determine whether or not the database name shows up in the home page. With this URL I can now go to a browser, or move that aside type in that URL and remember if I use a port other than port80 I must type it in preceded by a colon . And here I am at the FileMaker homepage that is generated on this computer and from any computer that has access to this IP address. I can come here and click on a database name, if it is shown there. And here I have the database shown in a browser, here is the database shown in FileMaker itself. One of the ********* that you need to worry about is that if you are behind a firewall you need to make certain that port in question is opened ,if you are using 591 for example. Also you need a static IP address unless people are going to connect using a different address every time. The difference between static and dynamic IP addresses has to do with whether you are using an always on connection or a dial up connection. Dialup connections typically have a different IP address every time you use them, this address and address starting with 192 is a local area network that's behind a router. All of these are internet and networking consideration that are not specific to FileMaker. What is specific to FileMaker is that in order to turn on internet instant web publishing use sharing instant web publishing turn it on, click on the file you want to share, specify who can use it whether or not to put it in the home page and you are done. You also have to worry about the fact that if people are connected to the database you will not be able to close the database while people are connected. People will need to use the same account names and passwords that you set up in the security for file making you use the same account names and privilege sets for the web as you do for FileMaker itself and for FileMaker networking. And that's all there is to publishing your databases on
