I have a table containing numbers dates times and timestamps. I am going to use this data in the table to demonstrate how you find dates timestamps and numbers. It is very similar to the way in which you work with text but it is not quite the same. When I go into find mode notice I have a number 32 here I can find 32. That is just like working with text but unlike text here I have a -3 (Negative Three), I can't search for the negative sign instead I search for less than zero. If I search for the negative sign I get an error message. Now when I go into find mode I number the symbols here less than, less than or equals and so forth these are designed specifically for numbers, dates and times. There is a short cut to today's date which is a // (double slash). When I search for, let me again look at these dates I have 2/4/2004 and 2/11/2004 if this was text and I wanted to search on something in February of 2004 I could search for 2/*/2004. That would work in a text filed it does not work with a date field. 0:01:28.4] But with the date field what I can do is I can go into find mode and I can search for > 2/6/2004 (greater than) and it will find the February 11th. Let me look at the all the records now. I can also wind up depending on how the validation rules have been set up. I can wind up with invalid data in a field. This is number field that contains word Three, going into find in search using the ? (question mark) I will find invalid data or badly formed data that may have got in there. That can be very helpful in cleaning up a database. What you might want to do is find fields that have text in them or find badly formed dates and they need to delete the entire found set or fix each field that you come to. I can have fields that are actually correct but that appear to be incorrect. Here is the time stamp with a partial time. It has hours, minute and no seconds but this is legal and it can be entered. There is one little **** that you have to worry about with searching with numbers. I am going to briefly go into layout mode and I am going to change the number field. So that it is formatted as a decimal with 2 decimal digits. Now the value of this number was 17.595 because I am displaying it with 2 decimal digits it is displayed as 17.60. If I go in to find mode and search for 17.60 I do not find it. And that is because the value of that field is not 17.60, it is 17.595. If I search for 17.595 I find it now this can cause some confusion and you have to watch out for it when you are designing databases and when you are using databases. Here I search for 17.595 and I found a record that appears to have a different value 17.6 further more if I look at all the records in the database I can see very clearly that there is value 17.60 but I cant find it what I will find is the actually underlined value 17.595. Now because of the fact that number can be reformatted in the layout you have to be aware of the actual value of the number and one reason for creating layout with data displayed as it is entered is that it may make searching easier, particularly when you have decimal number or things of that nature.
