Now I am going to continue from where I was at the end of the last segment when I had created this second record that has a different serial number, but it has the same text in the first name field. It has phrase enter first name in the first name field of this record and of the previous record. This is the second record that I have entered that has duplicate data I am now going to move to the next record in the database. But I am not because file maker is telling me that this field first name is to find to contain unique values and that I have a duplicate value here the duplicate value is the phrase enter first name and before I can go on I have three choices I can revert the record to what it was before I start editing I can say no to not allow this duplicate value or I can say yes allow the duplicate value. Okay I am going to be lenient I am going to say yeah no I know what I am doing I have a duplicate value there so I am going to say yes. I am going to go back to this field and notice now that I set up some validation rules that the first name field would be a unique name, but ***** here I am flipping back and forth between this records because I have over wrote that now validation. My database validation rule is now broken I did that I set up the database to allow that database rule to be broken but it need not be broken in all cases. I am now going to enter a very long last name I am going to take out the serial number and type. This text is too long for the validation rule that I have defined. I click out of the field and I get the different error messages it says this field is limited to twenty characters it must be unique and cannot be empty try again. This is not a file maker generated error message. The previous error message that you saw was generated be file maker but I typed the same when I set up the database and one of the reasons I did is so that instead of just the generic error message I was able to add the information that if you need help contact Barbara, presumably everyone who runs this database will know who Barbara is and how can get in touch with her. because this is very specific this is a very common use of custom error messages telling people how they can solve the problem not just in terms of the data but with someone who is around to help them. Now I don't have three buttons at the bottom of this dialogue as I did in the previous one I do have a revert field button so I can revert the field to what was there before. In this case that was blank and I have an ok button I don't say yes except this data if I click okay ok I am out of that but if I click anywhere else to try to go another field another record I can't I cannot over write that error message. I am not revert the field what was in there before and I can't go into another record. So you can specify that the validation rules can or cannot be over written and you can create custom validations. I have not shown you by any means all of the validation rules that you can apply to the database let me talk more about designing databases you will see all of the validation rules that can be used.
