Subtitles of the Movie

You seen how you can format text using the format menu when you have selected text in a field , or when you are simply in the field itself by the way one of the most common mistakes that people make is to apply formatting with nothing selected. Formatting applies to what ever you have selected or to what you type after you have chosen the formatting. So for example if I am down here and I choose italics nothing happens, however when I start to type you will see that from the point at which the insertion was when I chose the new style is now in italics. If I wanted to italicize what's already their I would select it and come up here and make it bold face for example. so remember that if you want to change what's in the field either put the insertion point add the point after which you want new typing to be changed , or select what ever part of field you want to change. It new typing that matters if I put the insertion point at the beginning of the field and change it to italics nothing will happen, but new text that's inserted there will be italicized. but now lets look at other types of field that file maker has perhaps the most different type of field from a text field is a container field , if I click over here you will see this field is highlighted I can't formatted because there is nothing in that field but I can insert images, quick time files, sounds or files into this field. Now I have prepared several files and there sitting over here in a folder and these are the files that I am going to use in this example. The first thing that I can do is I can drag a clipping file on the Macintosh in to that container field . Now this file is a clipping file it was generated infact from I chat from video camera. It's not a file type that is recognized by file maker except for fact that it's a clipping it's something that came through the clip board. Now let me clear that of and I am going to use the insert menu to insert a picture into the file, now you will notice the that file is not highlighted here because that is not a picture file type that is recognized. It's recognized only through the clip board. But I can take another file lets say a jpeg file and select it and inserted it there. Now in the insert menu I have the choice of inserting the file or only a reference to the file. If I store a reference to the file that when I go to the this record in file maker I will be able to see the image or the contents of the file because I have a reference to the file and as long as the file is still there on disk file maker can read it and display it's contents. If I don't store reference the entire contents will be copied into the database that means that I can share the database without the people they will not need access to the file. but I can do more I can insert quick time movies infact I can insert any quick time file type into that container, PDF is a quick time file type. Quick time can display PDF documents. So if I insert a quick time file I can put PDF file there and I can move through that document page by page and if the container ********* able to read it of course. But so I can put quick time file including PDF file in there I can also put any type of file in there. So this is the file this was the clipping file that I could not insert as a picture but I can insert it as a file and you will see I have an icon and the name of the file. So my choices for inserting are to insert pictures, quick time files, sounds or any file to which I have access on the computer and in the insert dialogue I can always decide whether I want entire file or only a reference to a file. What this means is ***** insert any file type into the container of a file maker database , then you can use file maker almost as if it were a document management tool. It's not which you can make it appears if it's one. Now the last thing that I want to show you here is that I can open an image here and I am opening it in Photoshop. I can select part of the image may be I just want the spray from the water fall. I can select that copy it I can come into the container and pasted in and I got the same route I got with the first image this is through the clip board. This is a clipping file and here is just that part of the image pasted into the container. So that's what I can do I can paste images in I can insert pictures, quick time files, sounds or any file to which I have access.
