Entering Data in Browse Mode / Entering Text

Subtitles of the Movie

Let's take a deeper look at entering text in a FileMaker. If I go into a field into which I can enter text I have a variety of formatting commands available to me up in the formatting menu that I can use to apply to the text. If I am not in a field where I can enter text and I am going to click in the background notice there is no insertion point no fields are highlighted I don't have the formatting command available. But now I am in text field and I can choose standard word processing formatting commands, I can change the font, the size, the style of text, the alignment, spacing and the color of the text , or if I want to change them in more integrated fashion I can open the text dialogue and in the single text dialogue I have the font, the size, the style, and the color, I also can click the paragraph button and set the alignment from here as well as indentations for the first and other line and the line spacing. I can also set tabs. Now in a single field like this where there is just one word or a few words some of those don't make much sense. But in large field that will take a paragraph or multiple paragraphs of text you can apply the formatting that you want. However be very careful about this because if you are exporting data from FileMaker. Sometimes the exported text is not going to have the formatting instructions that you have associated with it. For example let's say that I decide I am going to use a italics to indicate someone who is no longer alive. This is an example of a really bad data entry choice. Because if I export this data as text the formatting instructions the italics will not be exported and I will lose that information that I have provided. Now that all other forms of exporting that do preserve the formatting but not all of them do. In addition it is very wide spread practice. But it is very bad practice to use formatting and styles to indicate something about the data, that's an example of something where you would want to change the database to have a field in the database that would indicate whether the person is living or dead. Don't use incidental characteristics of data to mean something because it will turn around by during the end.
