Entering Data in Browse Mode / Using the Status Area in Browse Mode

Subtitles of the Movie

Now lets look at the status area it's at the left of the window and I can show and hide it using this button that appears at the bottom of every Filemaker window. Notice I just click to show or hide the status area and it lets me control how I moving through the database and how Filemaker is operating which mode it's in. In order to properly show to you I am going to add another record to the database I am going to click new and type in another record. So I now have two records in the database and I can show you how the status area works I know that their are two records in the database because the status area is showing me there is a total of two records in the database. If I want to go to a specific record I can type the number of the record press written and I will go to that record. If I want to navigate through the database I can use the book and if you notice the right hand page is highlighted which means I can go to the right, there are no more records here so this is great but I can go forward, backward . If there is a variety of records more than two in the database I can use the slider to move from one to the other and I am going to create a bunch of blank records and you will see now there is eight records in the database and I can go approximately to the middle of the database and I am in record five I can go to record four. When you have large database it's sometimes convenient to able go all the way through beginning and approximately get to where you want to go, but that's really an awkward way of moving through a database because most of the time you are not looking for a specific record you are looking for specific data and that's when you would go into find mode. we will talk more about find mode later in this tutorial. but here is how you move from one mode to the other I am in browse mode which lets me enter and display data , find mode here will let me find data notice how the status area changes layout mode let's me design the layout and preview mode lets me look at how it will appear when it's printed. So I am going to go back to browse mode at this point and I am going to go the beginning of the database and there is my record. If the data has been sorted it will tell me that the data sorted and to sort data I am going to come up here and I am sorted based on the first name I will show you later how to use all the features in the sort dialogue, but as you can see the database is now sorted if I enter a new record, the database is now semi sorted. What that means is that it was sorted and then I have added something to it so that it is more or less sorted. The semi sorted status can be useful to you but most of the time you are interested in whether it is sorted or not sorted and a caution I am going to repeat it number of times through this course is that most people sort there data for to often it's much more useful to find data you are looking for then it is distorted in many many occasions so that's the status area in browse mode.
