Entering Data in Browse Mode / Working with a Data Layout

Subtitles of the Movie

All of the starter solutions have the same basic design. So let's take moment to look at them because it will help you use all of the starter solutions and also the design features of the starter solutions are very good for any database that you want to create. Their are three basic areas to this window in addition to the status area over here. On the layout side at the top you will see the name of the database and then are variety of navigation tools above this solid line this area is more or less a tool bar and you will see there are some icons here that let me create a new record in the database delete a record or start finding data. The commands are shown in text as well as with icons fairly standard icons that lets you easily create delete and find records. Now over here I can see some other buttons and these may not look like buttons but the pointer as I move it over the text changes to a pointing finger, Just as it does over more traditional buttons. So when ever the pointer changes to a finger I know I am over an area that's hot and Filemaker calls all of these buttons whether they have the appearance of a traditional button or not. Now the reason that I don't have icons here is something that's happened as interfaces has become more complex and people have got used to using computers. The fact is that it's not all that easy to come up with icon that, for example simply indicates that this area is going to help me view address labels I supposed to viewing a contact list. So we simply use the text and and as long as the text is in a area that appears to be a navigation area like a tool bar area, people will generally able to figure out that it is a button and certainly in all of the starter solutions this area up here most of the items are hot except for the title. So I know that I can click on this down here in the central part of the window I have a description of a field I can click on it doesn't change to a pointer. Now over here I have three tabs and as I click on this tabs notice that the window changes to different types of displays. Infact what's happening and you will see as we start working with layouts you will see how to do this. There are actually three different layouts and the top part of each of this three layouts is exactly the same and that is why this appears not to change as I move from one view to another but infact I am moving to three totally separate layouts , and here I have some help information's. I am going to come back to the initial layout move to window back to the center and then take a look at how we can enter data. When I want to enter data the first thing I have to is create a new record in the database. If you notice over here the status area there are no records here. I can use new I can come up here to the records menu and choose new record or I can use the keyboard equivalent any of those three will create a new record. Notice that I have a flashing insertion point and one field is highlighted that's the field where if I type data will be entered. The tab key moves me to the next field. Notice that as I moved out of the first field my first name appeared up here, as I type my last name nothing will happen but as soon as I move out of that field with the tab key or by clicking some where else, watch this area up here the data will be processed in one way or in another. This process is called clicking out of a field when I click out of the field certain validations may be performed or the data may be used in one way or in another. I can click other fields in any order and you will see that you can set up a tab orders so that you can move from one field to the next with the tab key. What ever field is highlighted that were I am going to be entering data. Now as you design your own layouts you can choose the form of highlighting for each field but what the starter solutions have is a common form of highlighting that is very useful to many people. Down here I have three additional sets of tabs. I have a main address the second address and I have the ability to look at related contacts and will see later on when we talk about relationships how this is implemented it's rather clever. But I am going to enter the main address now and I am just using the tab key and typing away, I can specify the type of address that this is and here I have got a pop up menu so I can choose from the items in this list and because the designer has allowed me to edit this I can also say I am going to add another item to this list and perhaps the item that I am going to want to add is a warehouse. I am editing this value list and that means that now when ever I use this list I can choose the item that I just added to it and that's basically how we navigate through the interface and enter data with Filemaker. now lets take a look at the status area.
