Entering Data in Browse Mode / The Browse Mode Menus

Subtitles of the Movie

Lets look at the menus that you will see when your in browse mode. Over here the FileMaker application menu is a same for all of the modes and remember these two menus looks slightly different on windows the edit menu is the same in all of the modes, the view menu is the first mode to changes the top of the view menu consists of four modes you can switch among them and the you have some commands that is specific to browse mode view is formalists to table. I am going to skip over inserted format for the moment and look at the records menu I can use it for example to create a new record. If I am in a field I can then use the insert command to insert data into that field depending on the type of field I can insert different things, this is what's called a container fields so I can insert files into it. This is a text field so that I can insert various forms of text into it and all of these would be talked about in due course. Now I can format a field a text field with this standard text formatting that you would expect. If I am in a container field I cannot use the format menu because formatting only applies to text. The records menu again has the various commands to use to manipulate records. The scripts menu lets you access FileMaker built in scripting language which is used with the script maker will talk about that elsewhere and the window menu lets you modify how the windows are displayed. Now there is a new command in the window menu new in this version of FileMaker. I am going to create a record here I can create a new record by using this icon here or by using the new record command and I am going to just type in some data here I am going to go back to the first record. Now I am going quickly here in moving from one record to the other because each of this features that I am using quickly here I will be talking about in-depth later on. I want to get to the window menu and I can create a new window notice this is the second window for content management, I am moving it aside and you can see I am displaying the same data. Now what FileMaker does is to make it impossible to have two people editing the same data at the same time. I just typed a space in here I am now editing the first name field. If I come over to this window which is showing the same record in the same file go into the same field I can click into the field I have no problem with that, I am now going to type a space and I cannot modify this record because it's being modified in a different window. I got here to this window just typed to space and FileMaker said "aha" this record is being edited and now until I get out of that I cannot enter it in another window. Now I click at the background I no longer have a insertion point here what ever changes I made have been committed. If you notice when I click back in here this now space after my first name I am clicking out of the field come in here and I can type as much as I want. Now this window has locked that record if I come in here I can click in the field that's all well and good now I type space I can't edit this one. FileMaker will make certain a single record can only be edited in one window at the same time. Now I am doing this with two windows on one computer the same mechanism comes into play when you are sharing data and infact if this window were on one computer and this window were on another computer exactly the same mechanism would be in place. I typed that in I am still in the field I am not going to able to edited here, but when I come back here and click out of the field there is no insertion point no field is highlighted the data is picked up in this window. FileMaker keeps track of this and now let's back up and take a look at some of the other elements in the interface.
