Lets finish up this first look at layout mode by looking it some of the other basic commands that you may use them in layout mode. In order to demonstrate these commands I have created several new fields in the database and they are as you see name address city state zip and telephone. Now in the arrange menu I already spoken about alignment in objects grid but if I select a number of items in the layout, I can now use standard graphic application program commands such as group and ungroup lock and unlock print and unprint forward send aback and send backward and rotate, to modify this fields and this work exactly the same way as they do in any graphics program Over here in the insert menu we already talked about inserting fields you can do it from the insert menu or from the status area. In later sessions we will talk about some of the other commands in the insert menu but for now I wanted to talk about the insert merge field command. If I insert merge field I create field that is a merge field and word processing document and I can type text before and after it. So lets say I insert the name field notice that I am in a section of text here I have a blinking cursor I can then format this as I want I am going to have a return and with in the same text area insert another merge field. I am going to insert another one and I am going to insert some text a comma and space, state two spaces merge field zip some text and now if I go into browse mode, and type some data you will see I have in this text area the text that I have entered. Now I enter some data, and I am tabbing from field to field and you will notice as I fill in each field the address is being constructed however I formatted it. Now when I go back into layout mode if I wan to do something such as italicize the everything except the name, I think come up here and use the style menu to italicize that when I come back into browse mode it's italicized. Now merge fields are called merge fields because they are so frequently used with mail merge applications. But they need not be let me go back to the field tips, sample solutions templates and what you will see is when I go into layout mode this is a merge field that data is entered here and this is a very common situation watch the titled up here as I delete this text when I click out of the field this changes. The convention in this templates with the starter solutions is it you do data entry here and some information which is played up here more or less as a title. So that's a very very common use of merge fields.
