Version 12 of FileMaker introduces a new file format, .fmp12. Now previous versions, FileMaker 7 through 11 all shared the same file format or .FP7. That means if you created a file in FileMaker 11, you could open it up in FileMaker 7. The only thing you wouldn't get was the new features such as a chart, but it would work. If you used all FileMaker 7 features, in FileMaker 11, the files would be identical, you wouldn't see a difference in, in either version. That's not true with FileMaker 12, so FileMaker Pro 12 or FileMaker Pro Advanced 12, you're going to get a new file format that means that if you create a file in FileMaker Pro 12 it will not open up FileMaker 7 through 11, it's just not possible. So you do have to convert your solutions if you're going to go from FileMaker 7 through 11 to 12 and they won't go backwards. Don't worry, you'll have a version left over from the, you know, before that conversion but if you make any modifications, you'll never go back to 7 or 11, it's not possible. But the biggest concern for people is that, hey, you know, I'm going to have to fix everything, it's not going to work perfectly. Well I'm here to tell you that it's a pixel perfect conversion, everything will look the same, everything will operate the same, there are going to be no problems and I'm going to prove that to you. Here is a very complex solution, if we go into Manage Database, we have Tables, Fields, Relationships, all kinds of stuff in here. We have Scripts, all kinds of scripts in here, we have Value Lists, we have Layouts, we have tons of layouts, everything's in here. When we convert this, it will look perfect, so I'm going to close it, simply drag the .FP7 file over to FileMaker Pro 12 Advanced or FileMaker Pro 12. It'll ask if you want to convert it, you can rename it, I wouldn't recommend that, you don't really need to, they're going to have a different extension so no need to do that. Decide where that new invoice solution is going to be, if it's going to have a new name, I'm just going to leave the same exact name. Whirrs around for a little bit. Not going to take very long and there's the solution, it looks exactly the same, operates exactly the same, nothing has changed. Just open up the .FP7 version and you'll see, they look identical, you really can't tell the difference so I wouldn't worry too much about that, converting. One thing you will want to look at is possibly is the Conversion Log. If you open that up, you'll see everything that it did. You really don't need to look at this, it was more essential when you went from FileMaker 6 or earlier to FileMaker 7, because it had to change a lot of things. It's really not going to change anything in here, there's a few little things but they, they really shouldn't effect the operation of it. When you went from FileMaker 6 to 7, there were some things that could have been changed that would effect the operation and you would want to see those. I don't really think you need to look at the Conversion Log but its there if you do need it. And again, notice that you have the .FP7 version and the .fmp12 version, so if you want to go back to the .FP7 version invoice, it's kept that original copy, it's still there.
