Working with the Database / Schema from Table View
Subtitles of the Movie
Table View in FileMaker 11 has been dramatically expanded. It actually allows you to edit schema or structure right from Browse Mode when you're looking at a Table View. If you remember back to when we created our database at the beginning of this tutorial, FileMaker places some Table View, that's because you can actually do some basic creation of fields right inside of Table View without going to Manage Database. So let's try that out. It's really quite simple and this feature's really for beginners. Just hit that Plus sign and we just created a field. Type in whatever and we just went ahead and created that field, whatever. We can even go and edit another field name, just by double clicking we can go in here and edit the name of this field, or we can come back over here and decide I want this to be a number field and I think I want this to have some field options like auto-enter the number 1. You can do a lot from here, it's amazing and if you don't believe it, if you go to Manage Database and look in here there's the whatever field right there. Now we can also delete a field from here. Just hit Delete and it's gone. Now it says field missing here because it's still part of the Table View. We have to remove it from here. But it's actually gone from the layout now and it's gone from Manage Database as well. So you have all kinds of capabilities here as far as creating your database without ever going into Manage Database. It won't have relationships and things like that but, in fact, even seasoned developers might use this because you can so quickly create a field without having to go File, Manage, Database and Create there. But, everybody's going to have a different way of looking at it. It's certainly good for beginners, no doubt about that. Now you have some other features there. You can go in and do reporting. We're not ready to cover reporting yet, but you could quickly create reports by adding sub-summaries and sub-totals and all kinds of things. So, you want to take a look at how this works. Kind of save this till we go over the reporting section because I don't know that it's going to be very helpful for you right now, but check out how all this stuff works as far as adding fields. Maybe you'll like it just to be able to quickly add a field or change a field name.
