FileMaker Pro 10: Beginner Tutorials

Introduction / New FileMaker Pro 10 Features pt. 6

Subtitles of the Movie

In an effort to make FileMaker Pro 10 even easier to use than before, that's a difficult task, believe me. FileMaker has implemented some user interface changes in the script maker or now the Manage Scripts Dialogue. So that's the first change instead of script maker it says manage scripts. And this corresponds to what you see over here under manage. You'll also have that option here but they wanted to leave it available to where people are used to it. So that's one change and now you're going to see also a default report script, now this is available a long, long time ago in FileMaker and they removed it. They brought it back, if you click on here, instead of an empty script, which is what you're used to, you can now choose a default script. This is a script that attempts to make a button for you or you're going to attach a script to a button that will display a report for you. So it looks at what you've done, it looks at the layout you're on which should be report layout when you create this script. It looks what the find was and in this case we had shown all records and it looks at what the sort was. And it puts that all into a script for you so you can literally just say save this script after you've named it and that'll be a button that you can put anywhere else that will come to this layout, this report layout that you've created and display it for you. So it's really a great feature for beginners I think. So we'll delete that out of there and you'll also notice that we have instead of group, we have now folder. And that was just easier to understand for most users. You'll also notice that instead of all scripts, we now have Show All here. And now when we come in and we edit a script, you notice that we have more options for how we display our scripts. Before we had web compatibility, now you can display all, client, server or web publishing. So they really had to add this and you notice when I choose web publishing, obviously the script is not going to be with instant web publishing and you can see that all the unavailable script steps are dimmed out. Same with server, they had to add this because they had this new feature, they couldn't put a bunch of check boxes in there, they might as well make a pop-up menu, it's a better user interface. So, we'll close that and then last thing you'll notice is outside of the script maker dialogue, you'll see this inside custom menu's and inside but definitions, we'll go into layout mode, double click on a button, you notice that this is simply in bold here. Just makes it stand out more so you can more readily view what this button does. So we'll go back here to Browse Mode, go to the next slide and here's a wonderful feature, set field by name. But remember it's a very complicated feature. We're not going to show how to use it right now because it require very complicated example. I just wanted to give you an overview and an idea of what it can do. So essentially it's the same as existing set field script step. The difference is you can now attach a calculation to the target. Before you had to specify a field and you had no choice. Now you can say decide what that target field is by a calculation so you can calculate what you put in it and now you can calculate where it goes. So you could take a looping script that had 10 set fields in it and make it 1 set field. Essentially making it more efficient and making it easier to make conditional scripts. It'll be easier to modify it later on, just makes sense but again this is for more complicated examples, there's no real good simple example to show you. So you'll see examples of this scattered throughout the tutorial.
