FileMaker Pro 10: Beginner Tutorials

Introduction / New FileMaker Pro 10 Features pt. 4

Subtitles of the Movie

One of the first things you're going to notice in the new FileMaker Pro 10 is the redesign status area. They've moved it from the left side to the top with a more modern look and they've redesigned the icons but that's not all, they've actually put in new functionality. So let's take a look at it, you can reveal it like this if you want or like this or like this. There's many ways to get to the new status area. Again notice it's at the top but you'll notice that everything has been redesigned. Here's the Rolodex, here's what record drawn, there's your little slider and here we have a little icon that shows you how many records you have in the found set. So if I go ahead and omit a record, you'll notice that you can see a little piece of the pie coming out. See how that works? Kind of a nice user feedback, so we'll go back to Show All Records and move back there. And you'll notice that there's additional buttons in here that are much more informative, much easier to read. You also have your layouts right here, your view as, your preview, your edit layout goes right to Layout Mode for you, much easier to use. In fact, you'll find out that there's additional functionality in here. If you just click on Find and do a find, it's going to do the same thing as if you went up to the View Menu and chose Find Mode. But if you click and hold down, you're going to notice that you can look at your recent finds or look at saved finds. Let's try this out real quick. We'll go to the Window Menu and go to the New Example and we'll go into Find Mode here and we'll do a find for John. And we'll perform that find and if we go back and hold down on the Find button, you notice that we can do our find over again, it's just remembered it for us. In fact, if we don't want it, we'll just clear it and it will be gone. And we can also save finds, we can say save the current find, we'll call it find by John, we'll click Save and you'll notice that that will now be underneath there, find by John. And we can even edit or save finds, you can come in here, edit them and if you've ever done any scripting you'll notice that not only can you change the name but here's a same dialog that you get when you're scripting and you're saving a find in the performed find or in a Find Mode. You can actually edit this and change how this find does it so you can manual change it. You can, of course, the easier way to do it is to go ahead and do the find and have it remember it but if you want to tweak it a little bit it might be easier to do it from here. And of course you can delete them from here as well. There we go, we'll delete them right here. So now it won't be available anymore. So there's some of the increased functionality that is just great, I really love that feature. But you can also customize the toolbar. If we come up here, to View, we can choose customize status toolbar. And it's simple, if you want to have the ability to duplicate a record, you simply drag it in there, there it is. It got shoved over here but it's still in there. If you want to go back to the standard settings, you just drag this back in there, it'll be back to what it was when you first opened FileMaker. And of course you can change a whole bunch of other options, use small size, text only, icons only, icons and text. But I think you'll find that the way that FileMaker set it up is probably the best way. Now of course you can customize the toolbar in any area. In fact, the toolbar, the status area is different in every mode. We don't have enough time to go over every mode but you'll see that you can come in here and work with this and customize it anywhere you want. So if we come in and customize the toolbar here, then you'll notice that there's different options. And you'll notice that it's really useful inside of Layout Mode, I like the toolbar best here. You can come in here and get to your, your uh, info dialog very easily. Instead of having to go to the View Menu and choose it here, now you can go ahead and just simply get it there. And so it will take a while to get used to but the improvements are dramatic here. So we can go back into Find Mode, you'll notice different options here. And if we go into Preview Mode different options here as well. So, a dramatically new status area, very, very useful, don't think of it as just a redesign of the look. They've thought about everything about where everything's placed, they put new functionality in there. It's really wonderful, it'll take you a while to explore it but I think you'll be very happy with it.
