Ultimate Find / Find Layout pt. 2

So, one other thing I want to do here is display or change this color. For some reason, this is not in gray, so I'm going to change it to gray here. So we're going to go to our Fill Color, choose gray, and that looks much better. There we go. So I've got that red going across there. Now people really know they're in Find mode. It should be pretty obvious, or at least I hope it will be. So now we can add our fields and we're just going to make it easy on ourselves. We're going to switch over to Form and you can add as many fields as you want, but I'm going to choose just three fields here because an important thing to do is to figure out what your users need to do, so this is your customers or contacts database or table and I think most people, or at least I'm designing this feature based on this, most people are going to just want to search on company, first or last name. They're trying to find somebody. They don't need to search on address and city and state. Maybe they do. Maybe you interview them and find that they need that, but I'm going to choose not to do that here. So I'm going to copy that, switch back to my Find layout. We'll paste it, maneuver them where I want them. That looks good. And now what we can do is put in some instructions. We'll get the Text Tool and we'll type in Instructions, Enter Your Find Criteria. Make sure I spell everything correctly here. And click Continue. Let's click the Continue button. We're actually going to eventually add a button here, so click the Continue button. There we go. Or Type the Enter Key. OK, that looks pretty good. Now, what we want to do is make this look better. I mean, red text is nice. It stands out and you can see it really well, but I don't really think we need to have the instructions right in their face every single time they come in here, so what I'm going to do is I'm going o choose to make this a lot smaller. Let's go over here and make it 10-point. Let's change the text color to, well, let's say let's make it a dark gray and then we're going to make sure we're the right font here, so we'll go pass it up here. Remember, we're using Verdana. Finally found it. And then we're going to duplicate this, so let's Edit, Duplicate, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, not 6, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Change that text color to white and then Arrange. We'll send it to back. So what you get is a little engraving look here. In fact, if you use this same technique whenever you're putting instructions right on a layout, what will happen is people will get used to it and then you won't even need the word Instructions. They'll just realize that this particular look, since it's different than this text here, this indicates a label. If you are consistent in what you do, people will just realize, oh, that's instructions, I know that. So let's go ahead and select that. It looks like it's a little bit too long here. There we go. I'll move this up, line it up nicely. That looks pretty good. So now we have our instructions. Now we can create our script. So let's go back over to our layout and you'll notice that I already have this little button here. Let's go back into Browse Mode. I already have this button here and I've already made it highlight nicely. In fact, I already have a tool tip on it. So let's take a look at those things. Now, if you want this graphic, you can just go into the End file of the Work Files and folder, and find this graphic and copy it. I think it looks real good. It's got a little bit of red on it. It attracts your eye to it. Let's see what we've done to it. We've gone ahead and made it a button and we used that technique where we drew a circle here and drew three lines for the handle and connected them together and made them invisible. That's because a graphic from Photoshop or some other painting program is going to highlight square. We wanted it to highlight nicely, so we made a circle in FileMaker and then those three lines, grouped them and added our button to that. Then, over here, what we're going to do is show you the tool tip. This is something we've already done. I just typed in the word Find with a space and then did that Get Layout Name, get the left word, and then use proper, because I'm already foreseeing that we're going to use this little Find icon or button on our invoices and our products, so I want to make sure that this little tool tip is accurate, based on whatever layout we're on. So that's all we did there. Very simple. Now we're going to create our script. So we'll come over here and create a new script. We'll call it Ultimate Find. Now, it's not really ultimate yet, but it will be soon. It's a real simple script. Go to your Customers Find layout. Then we want to enter Find mode. We want that pause because we want it to pause so the user can enter their Find criteria, and then we need to Perform Find. Don't get Perform Find Replace; get Perform Find. No options on this because we want to perform the find on what they entered not any remembered Find requests. Then we're going to go to Layout, Original Layout, simple as that. Come back to the layout where we started, where we initiated that script. That will be wherever that button is clicked. So that's a neat little feature, that Go To Original Layout, there. So that's all of our simple script, just to use that layout. Let's see how it works. Close that and save it. Uncheck it. Double click on our button. OK. Perform Script, Ultimate Find, and now we can try it out. We'll hit the button. Notice it goes to Find mode. We can type in John, hit the Enter key, and voila, it does a Find for us. So we're going to expand quite a bit on this Find script, but for right now, it does one of the most important things, which is make sure that the user knows they're in find mode. That is crucial. It's the most common mistake and if you can prevent that error, even if you stop here with your script, this is the best thing you can do. Make sure they know what mode they're in.
