Ultimate Find / Find Layout pt. 1
Subtitles of the Movie
Before we start creating our Find script, we need to create a Find layout. Now, you could use a Show Custom Dialog to save yourself some time. It's a lot of work to create a layout. You have to put an interface on it. You have to arrange the fields and line them up. You have to put buttons on there. A Show Custom Dialog is so much easier. You have input fields and those input fields could be carried over into Find mode and perform a find on it. So you can see how much easier it would be to use your Show Custom Dialog, but you are limited to three fields and you may want more than three fields on your Find layout. You're also limited to three buttons. You may want more than three buttons. So there are some definite flexibility options with the layout and I'm going to do it this way because I want that flexibility, but realize you can use Show Custom Dialog, especially with this technique we're working with. There's no reason why you couldn't substitute a Show Custom Dialog here. So let's go ahead and create our layout. We're going to go into Layout Mode and we're going to duplicate one of these dividers. So we'll go to Layout before, because you can select it, switch to that layout, then we'll go up to Layouts and duplicate the layout, then go to Layout Setup. We'll call it Customers underscore Find, and it's very important that you spell it exactly the same way I am. It'll make a difference later on. Make sure you're showing records from customers here. Then we'll go ahead and manage out layouts. Then we're going to move our Customers Find up here. I like to be tidy as I'm working with things so I don't have to rearrange everything at the end. It's much easier to do it as you're going along. So I'm going to move up Customers underscore Find with all my other customers' layouts. So we'll click OK and now we can get rid of some stuff. We don't need the logo in here. We don't need this text down here. That looks pretty good. Everything else we'll keep. So the first thing we're going to do is change the title. We're going to say Customers underscore Find. To make it easier for me, I'm going to Select All, Copy, and then very carefully double click on that gray background there, do a select all, but this time I'm going to choose Paste, but with the Option or Shift key if you're on Windows. This will paste text only so that that text that I copied, which was black, will paste and take on the settings that are there, on that gray. There you go. So you can see how much easier that is and you prevent mistakes in typing and things like that. OK, so let's go ahead and put on some different colored bars here. These blue bars look great, but they really indicate that you're in Browse Mode. I want to take these away and put in some bars that look like you're in Find mode. So we're going to go over to our FileMaker Reference and scroll up here until we find the red bars. There we go. Since you don't have access to FileMaker Reference, you just need to go to the Work Files so you can grab these from the End folder on the Work Files. That's because I'm adding them here and you'll have access to this file that I'm working on. So we'll simply drag this in here. There we go. We'll hide this window, come over here, drag it in there. That looks good. Get it just right. And then we'll duplicate it. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Move it over, get it just right, and then, if we duplicate, and I'm going to use the keyboard command, it'll do the smart duplicate so we can just make it very quickly go across here. Then the last one doesn't quite fit, so we'll move it over, get it just right, and there we go. Now it really shows you that you're in your Find mode.
