The Installation Process / An Installation Plan

Subtitles of the Movie

An Installation Plan. Don't let the Fedora 11 installation control you. Well, the default Fedora 11 installation, it works well for the average user, but just the fact that you're watching these videos suggests that you're more than just an average user, so before starting the installation process have a plan. Know a few key things in advance. First there are the basics. You need to know the basic keyboard and language desired for the installation. In the U.S. generally, it's a U.S. keyboard and American English. Other keyboards and languages can be added at a later date. Then, there is the information which may be assigned by a DHCP Server Ð that's Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, which is your basic network address information. If you want full control over your system consider the following. Setup a unique host name for your system. Setup a unique static IP address for the local network based on your network address. For example, 192.168.0.10 can be set up as a unique static IP address on 192.168.0.0 network. And, for your system to communicate on the Internet you need to know the IP address of Domain Name System, that's DNS servers, on the local network. For many home networks the local network router serves this purpose. Whatever the IP address of your DNS servers, you may be able to get it from your ISP, you can set your DNS Server configuration to that one or more IP addresses. Besides partitioning, which is a detailed subject we talk about in a different video, you also need to be prepared with the local time zone. Yeah, you know what time zone you're in, but also you need to know whether to set the system hardware clock to Greenwich Mean Time. When you run the installation program it shows up as an acronym known as UTC. That's a foreign language acronym based on a political compromise that technically doesn't really mean anything except that it's really Greenwich Mean Time, the standard Time Zone for London and the United Kingdom. And you should set your system to UTC to support automatic changes of your clock based on Daylight Savings Time, unless you're setting up a system with a dual boot with Microsoft Windows. You'll want to know the password you're setting for the root administrative user as well as the basic installation requirements. In other words, what you want to install, such as office suites, graphical applications, and more. Once you have this information available, preferably written down, and an idea of how your going to partition available hard drive space, you're ready to start installing Fedora 11. But wait, there's a special situation. What if you're dual booting between Microsoft Windows and Fedora 11? We cover that in even another video.
