Alternative for Browsers and E-mail. Well, I'd covered just one option for web browsing and e-mail but there are a number of other alternatives in Linux. For the purpose of this video, the two packages that I installed are C-monkey and Silfeed. Install them on your own system if you want to follow along. The Silfeed E-mail Reader is a straightforward graphical e-mail reader. To open it click Applications, Internet, Silfeed. There it is. It's an e-mail client and the first time you open it you'll get the Preferences for New Account Window. If you've already configured an existing account, you can get to this window by clicking Configuration, Create New Account. And let's just go over the options it gives you. You can name the account as desired with basic personal information associated with your identity along with the e-mail server and it supports the basic e-mail servers. Under the Receive Tab it supports regular or secure authentication as well as more basic settings associated with the e-mail server. The send information, which is usually a connection to a different server, allows you to set up authentication and other basic information as needed. The Compose Tab allows you to set up a signature for your emails as well as automatic e-mail addressing as needed. For example, if you're at work you may want to automatically cc your boss on any emails that you send out. Privacy and Privacy Tab supports various forms of encryptions as well as PGP Keys. PGP is short for Pretty Good Privacy, also known in Linux as GPG. The SSL Tab supports encrypted authentication in connection using the Secure Sockets Layer. Finally, Advanced Settings allows you to configure non-standard supports for outgoing and incoming emails, as well as the associated domain name and any non-standard locations for your basic sorts of emails such as send messages, queued messages and so on. Let's close out of this and head on over to C-monkey which is based on Netscape code, if you remember the old Netscape Navigator. That code was open sourced and is now implemented as the C-monkey browser which you can open with Applications, Internet, C-monkey web browser. While C-monkey also includes other systems, we'll just take a brief look at the browser, at least after showing you what's available under the Window Menu. The Window Menu Options show the old Netscape Navigator options for the browser, mail and newsgroup reader, e-mail composer, address book as well as chat options and to see how C-monkey works, let's just navigate to the VTC.com. And I can browse just fine with the C-monkey browser. If you need a plug-in for C-monkey, navigate to the URL shown here. It takes a moment to connect and here we are with the Add-ons available for the C-monkey browser. If you're interested in more alternatives, go to the Command Line and try the mail command. It's a text-based e-mail client. If you want something a little more sophisticated, Alpine is pretty popular as another text-based e-mail client. Alternatively, and excellent web browser from the console is ELinks. Try it out for yourself. You'd be surprised at how much web browsing you could do from the Command Line. Thank you and as they tell me to say, on to the next video.
